Everything is technically as slick as you could expect from the Bodom lads, but the song writing just isn’t there.

imo this sums up the album perfectly

Totally. And when I go listen to hatedbreeder I can't find myself enjoying it like I used to. I guess that neoclassical thing got boring after a while for me and for the guys in the band as well. I don't hate this album but I feel like there's so much good stuff out there, why would I waste my time and money on something this... regular... if you know what I mean.

I listened to Hatebreeder again recently and really liked it. I thought all the solos and stuff were insufferably cool.

Im so glad this album got the score it deserved.....They can do better than this but theyve become greedy and just want to sit back and let their name do the work.

I listen to this album which is ok but I don't find myself replaying tracks or anything really memorable sticking after I've heard it. Maybe it will grow on me or maybe I've just lost interest.

They're getting closer though...The leads are there, the gang shouts, the keys are a somewhat relevant part of the music again...Increase the sophistication of the drumming, ditch the easy choruses, intricate the solos, and lose the juvenile lyric writing...And we're back to normal.

Yeah... I'd give it early 70's, the music's much more complex than it was on AYDY.

Children of Bodom in general got boring after a year or two for me. Got into them when I was 14, got out of them before I turned 16. They always felt like a light metal band to me, and never thought their songwriting was particularly good. Too verse-verse-chorus-verse with a neoclassical solo and metal guitarwork.

I guess, at least, their stuff is varied.

Not sure what band you guys are listening to, but COB have hardly moved an inch or two in any direction beyond where they started.

I don't think this is one of those "oh noes style change" things, more like one of those "oh noes lacking inspiration" things.

+1
I've never been a great Bodom fan, but their last songwriting is far worse than their first songs.

Yesterday leaked For the revolution... I'm sure that is 100 times better and more inspired than this one.

Bodom is the type of band you grow out of so you can start trying to find out what the fuck Spiral Architect and Meshuggah are doing.

Children Of Bodom is great cheesy fun. At their worst, they're uninspired, i.e. Blooddrunk.

I love this album! It's just as good as Hate Crew Deathroll... I'd say it's better, even.

Sure. But it doesn't touch the band's first three.

That may be true, but the band will never release anything as mediocre as their first album. FTR & HB were amazing but its a little unfair to the material to compare later albums to those two. I just don't think you can compare material like that. Every album should be given a chance and should stand up on its own merits.

You're quite right. Problem is, I did give this one a chance, and I wanted it to be good (some may recall my 'praising' of Banned From Heaven). But it wasn't. It was blander than basically everything else they've released. And though Banned From Heaven is still an alright song, it does not help to save this album.

Children Of Bodom's newer material will always be compared to their old, because the old is pretty much their standard.
