Chicks listen to good music sometimes, too, you know.

Not straight ones. You are either a lesbian, a dude, or you don't really like good music. This is a fact proven with science and charts.

fake. the "non-metal looking metal girl" is a myth.

especially at concerts, even if they dress feminine it'll look like a pissed off version of this
or they'll have a tight strategically ripped Carcass t-shirt or something :P

No, I've seen them. Some of them are alumnae of my college, and served with me on the radio board. Some of them post in this very forum.

Last time I checked, Cara doesn't look like that.

Maybe it applies more over here. You do get a variety of ladies outside of metal, so why not inside of it? Another well-thought out and excellently-researched piece, Kayla.

I can relate to this author feeling different for her love of metal. Im a 39 yr. old black metal-head. But where are all the nice metal-head girls? The girls in my city (Paterson, NJ) all listen to gansta-rap, hip hop and r&b! At concerts, Im all about the music, so I wouldnt really try to talk to the girls there. It just seems extra difficult for a black dude who listens to heavy metal, because you are usually crucified by your own people for your musical tastes. (But you know what? I will NEVER stop listening to metal!)

I can totally relate. I know very few metalheads in real life. And I ALWAYS get criticized for my taste in music. Mainly for two reasons:

1. Most Americans in general look down on metal music and see it as "just a bunch of screaming."

2. I don't exactly fit the "metal stereotype" aesthetically. Most people, when they think of metalheads, think of freaks with long hair, tattoos, cigarettes in mouth, and spiked wristbands. So a lot of people are shocked when they find out that I'm a metalhead.

The life of a metalhead ain't easy, man.

Living outside Detroit, I can imagine being black and into heavy metal must be especially difficult. Almost every black person I know listens to rap and hip-hop.

I'd put money on that a significant proportion of non-metal-looking females are girlfriends of metalheads. My girlfriend looked a little out of place when I took her to see Gwar.

On a somewhat related note, my dad has gone to a few metal shows with me. He missed the metal boat almost entirely back in his day, not realizing he liked it until I started listening, so he doesn't have much of a metal background, he just knows he likes it. Every time we go he's asked to borrow one of my metal shirts because it helps him get into it more when he feels like he's part of the rest of the guys in the audience.

You're not alone... :dio:

But yes, you'll see a unicorn or velociraptor before you find a black metal head.

But conversely, do metal crowds accept various ethnicities and females? I don't need to explain the extreme elitism that comes from certain metal genres. Could you imagine someone non-Aryan at a Nargaroth or Emperor show?

Yeah you can't see them on a Hate Forest gig maybe, but Emperor would be fine.

A black drummer I play with sometimes is into metal, tech-death mainly. Cryptopsy, stuff like that.

I don't know his brother but apparently he is as well. He was telling me about how they had gone to a Morbid Angel gig in Derby back in the early 1990s. His brother is a massive guy, like 6 foot 6 apparently. Anyway, like a lot of people he had heard rumours about David Vincent being a racist, but had no idea whether they were true or not. So he's right at the front, and David Vincent's being all metal onstage. The gig was awesome, but just as Vincent was walking off past the front row at the end, my friend's brother catches his eye and smiles and says,

"here, mate, you're not really a racist are you?"

Apparently Vincent was terrified and just stammered "er, no way, of course not, mate" and ran away. :P

I know some metal chicks who don't look metal. Than again, I also know a bunch of goregrind brutal death metal chicks who look like goregring brutal death metal chicks. Suffice to say I'd be too scared to sleep with em.
