It's amazing how they released this after Falling Into Infinity. This is my favourite album of theirs after Awake. Everything about this one is amazing, everything flows into perfection, and while there are a few minor flaws, they just end up adding to the overall quality of the album.

I actually bought the live DVD without ever having heard this album. I was a fan of DT, and I thought the cover art looked pretty cool, so I went for it. I've never watched any DVD as much as I've watched this one. Me and my friends still throw it on when we meet up. LaBrie is terrible in the live version, but the rest of the guys make up for it by being amazing.

Funnily enough, I listened to this album today.

FUCK. It's basically the epitome of a Progressive Metal album. Everything I associate with Progressive Metal is here in full, totally and completely. It's absolutely brilliant, and I'm glad it got a classic here. :dio:

This used to be my favorite album and I still LOVE it. Classic for sure, I personally think Dream Theater were at their best here.

Yes, classic for sure.

This one has to be listened to from beginning to end to get the full effect.

As far as I know, the record label did push them on "Falling" to be more commercial and radiofriendly, and for "Scenes" they got all the freedom to do what they want.

Its predecessor, the much-maligned Falling Into Infinity, was an album more or less forced upon the band by their label, featuring the start of a musical move that could have seen them go the way of many of the 70s Prog giants and end up playing some kind of complicated disco music. Yet thanks mostly to drummer extraordinaire Mike Portnoy quitting and refusing to return unless the band were given control of their own music again,

Thanks, Captain Obvious.

And yeah, NESS, once I've started this it's impossible to stop it. Great album. I love love love the build up at the start, but it's all terrific. Honky-tonk piano FTW!

It's just unfortunate that they didn't keep going in this direction, and instead starting mixing in a lot of trendy (read that as "boring, ponderous, monotonous, and plodding") elements that anybody with a goatee can do, with the elements that only DT can do.

Chugga, chugga, chug, screech, screech, screech. Okay, thanks. Next.

A very celebrated album. I think it's very good but not perfect. There are a few areas (especially the vocals in some areas) that seem a bit awkward and always jump out at me when I listen to the album.

Weird, this is probably my favorite performance from Labrie, personally. I know he had more range on Awake and Images and Words, but for some reason this one always stands out to me.

Yeah, I saw a video tonight on TV of around 40 minutes from Vancouver, and I guarantee you its Petrucci and Portnoy's shit singing that created that awkwardness.

Yep. I always cringe at the shitty backing vocals when I watch the DVD. What the hell were they thinking?

But to be fair, LaBrie sucks too. I love his voice, but it's technically very shitty.

why chose this album out of all of them!? Images and Words is untouchable in my opinion. Labrie is just absolutely incredible.

He had ruptured vocal chords on this one from when they played in Cuba didn't he when he got food poisioning?

He always said he never felt vocally right until years later. The backing is shite yes I will agree. Especially Portnoy since I can't hear Petrucci too well.

But no way does this album touch Images and Words, Awake and Train of Thought. This was a poor one to chose for DT.

The rest have already been reviewed. One day I'll invent a time machine, until then you'll just have to read what other people think of things.

Erk, massive avatar.

Whoa, holdy horsies. Just thought you might have noticed the bit at the bottom of the review page mentioning what other reviews have been done from the same band, is all. No bother.

This is my favorite album. No question. I'm quite happy it finally got classic status.

Now we just need The Divine Wings Of Tragedy and I'll be pretty much happy :P
