Best Metallica album? Yes.

For Whom the Bell Tolls and Call of Ktulu are amazing.

I've debated with myself which is the better album, Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets, but every time I seem to have decided on one album I take one listen to the other and change my mind. As far as I'm concerned they are together the best back to back albums by any metal band ever.

Great review by the way, Adam. You pretty much expressed exactly how I felt about it and the songs. I too love the solo in the title track. For Whom The Bell Tolls has an incredible groove and one of the best intros ever, making up almost half the song. Fade To Black is probably my favorite Metallica ballad and Creeping Death is the ultimate Metallica track, that song has got it all. Ktulu is the best metal instrumental I've ever heard, period. The word "epic" does not do it justice and it projects images of untold horrors into my mind.

Escape defintely is a filler among all of these superb songs and a small taint on an otherwise near flawless album. I think Trapped Under Ice is a great song but suffers a bit from being similar to Whiplash but not nearly as good.

Even with its flaws I'd rate this album somewhere around 97-98/100, it's just too fucking good.

Am I the only one who quite likes Escape? It's a bit of a novelty to see Metallica doing a melodic Judas Priest-style 80s metal track.

No, I like it alot as well. It's a curious inclusion to an overall dark atmosphere, but I think its very underrated.

The one complaing I have about this album is the lack of dynamics. The songs just seem too linear. But otherwise, this album is fucking great.

I don't know about anybody else, but I've always hated the solo in the title track. It just has this whiny/irritating sound to it that I can't quite put my finger on. This is just my opinion, of course.

Trapped Under Ice has one of the best bridges ever in a Metallica song. But my three favorite songs on here are definitely Fight Fire With Fire, For Whom The Bell Tolls, and Creeping Death.

They day I heard the album "Heresy" by Paradox, I immediately stopped liking anything Metallica ever did.

this is pretty solid. But I don't seem to like it as much as others. Some tracks are absolutely killer though! CREEPING DEATH! :dio:

the vocals are nowhere near as aggresive as metallica. thier songs are great for second wave thrash, but don't have too much on metallica.

A great album, and a classic. I love Escape, one of the most underrated songs in metal. I prefer MoP, but both are really close.

Well, I'll check that band out cuz you know your thrash, but RTL is a classic through and through.

Yes. It's the weakest of the first bunch of 'tallicas in my mind, though. Some very good songs, some with dull parts. Not a patch on Master Of Puppets, though, that's definately better than Ride.

Master of Puppets is my ultimate favourite.. Kill 'em all is better than this too imo.

Really? Thats my favourite Hammet solo.

Anyway, this is far and away my favourite Metallica album. Fantastic songwriting the whole way through, from the thrashy greats like Fight Fire With Fire to Creeping Death (and yes, Trapped Under Ice), to the great ballad Fade to Black, to The Call of Cthulu, and to the vastly underrated NWOBHM inspired Escape. And my favourite track, and my favourite Metallica song, is Ride the Lightning, which is just so beautifully energetic, builds up incredibly well to a great climax, has the aforementioned favourite solo, and just kicks ass. 94/100.

Great review, Adam. And HT, how is "DIE BY MY HAND" boring?
