Suffocation was one of the headlining acts for Brutal Assault 2009, and they put on one hell of a show. Since it was their 20th anniversary, they decided to play pretty much this entire album. It was fucking sick.

As an added bonus, the after party for Brutal Assault also had Suffocation playing, but this time in a tiny club. They played pretty much the same set list, but the intimacy of the venue made it even better. There was a circle pit that covered every single inch of that place, it was beyond anything I have ever seen.

Suffocation are the true gods of death metal.

Nothing more needs to be added.
I prefer Pierced From Within to this though.

Its funny how one album made nearly 18 years ago is still unrivalled even by the bands that were influenced by it. Effigy of the forgotten is a landmark release, and I cant help but bang my head when listening to songs like Seeds of the suffering or Mass Obliteration. Excellent review, excellent album, and I hope to see Suffocation produce more quality albums in the future..

I'm kinda upset with myself. I have never gotten into Suffocation. Not because I don't like them, mostly because I haven't tried. Seeing as how I like most old-school death metal, then I should like this. I guess this is the album to start with.

I didn't get into them for ages, but just over the last few months I've been getting what the fuss is about.

See them live. I like Suffocation on CD, but I fucking love seeing them live. Once you've seen them live, you'll be fucking hooked.

Yeah its not the kind of thing you'll love after your first handful of spins.

I loved it first listen... I always thought Suffocation was one of those bands that either you like or you don't, but it seems I was wrong. :D

It's not like I can't take this kind of stuff, as I do have a pretty good grasp on the more brutal side of death metal. I just haven't given these guys a proper chance.

you need to check them out man, since your into thrash you'd probably be akin to liking Pierced from Within as well as this album. Both are fucking relentless and put any death metal band around today to shame.. Just listen to Torn into Enthrallment on Pierced from Within or Mass Obliteration from Effigy of the forgotten and tell me any older death metal band rivals Suffocation

I love Human Waste but other than that never really enjoyed Suffocation much.

I guess I need to listen to this a bit more, because it hasn't exactly clicked with me yet. Good to know I'm not the only one for whom it takes some work to get into.
