I personally do not think this is the best Death album.
It did turn the band from Death Metal to Technical Death Metal though.
It is a major improvement from the raw Scream Bloody Gore and
Leprosy.
But it is not the best work by Chuck, in fact i think both Symbolic and Individual thought Patterns are superior. My rating of Death Albums:

Scream Bloody Gore: 86
Leprosy: 86
Spirutal Healing: 85
Human: 92
Individual Thought Patterns: 100
Symbolic: 100
The Sound Of Perserverance: 98

Ah also the DvD Live In LA that was released is simply amazing and it gets a 95 from me.

-------
R.I.P
Chuck

One of the genre's finest, hands down. Chuck truly gave us a gift with his music. Thank you.

Individual Thought Patterns is an incoherent mishmash of ideas that make less sense the more you listen to it.

Symbolic is, though slightly more succint and listenable then the mess of Individual Thought Patterns, derivative of Athiest and Pestilence to the max.

The Sound of Perseverance could be renamed The Sound Of No Ideas easily, and would only miss describing the all-pervading wankery of that disc.

Death made some good pure death metal albums, one classic tech-death album, and then cranked out a giant load of nothing.

Control Denied rocked, though.

It was when I saw the video for Lack Of Comprehension on Much Music back in the day that I got my first taste of Death. While it's not my favorite Death CD it's still an excellent record. It was a transition album so I can see how some people might like it the best since it combines the old and new Death the most.

You find it to be amazing and unique because it failed utterly at doing what it set out to do?

Well, I suppose that could be called unique, in a way...

good album, but for sure not death's best one, and i'm doubting of it's classical-ness. maybe i should give it another spin before judging

All of them are damned good

Symbolic would be their most 'accessible' i reckon

i've heard Leprosy, Spiritual Healing and this one and this is my favourtie of the 3. totally kicks ass!

the riff after the solo in Lack Of Comprehension kills me every time.

IMO this is thier last great album...everything after "Human" is good but a bit boring for my taste...I like the old stuff by Death the best.

This was the album that really got me into Death. Great technical death metal; an album that really took things to the next level.

Bah. Their old-school DM albums were alright, yeah, but it felt like they had their own identity with those proggy later albums. Plus, your so-called "giant load of nothing" is what I believe made Death great.
