Just listened to Aeon, and it sounds like the rest of the album would be worth a spin if you're a fan of Isis or Mastodon, like me.

Awesome album and review. I'm always amazed by how hypnotizing the title track is.

I downloaded this a while ago, and i thought it was absolutely unlistenable.

Ill have to force myself to listen to it.

Although the review makes me excitedly want to hear it (i have to wait for Tentacles of Whorror to finish) so good job Adam :)

Hataz in da house!

Why didn't you guys like it? Just curious. It's a fairly common reaction, people either seem to like it alot or find it to be utterly repulsive.

It certainly struck me as repulsive at first. But I have loved this album for quite some time. It's really amazing how much more immeadiate Times of Grace was than this, but at the end of the day I like both about equally. Interesting that you pick Aeon out as the greatest work of the band: I always had a similar reaction to the crushing title track. I think by the end of the album I'm often simply worn out. Thanks a bunch for the review Adam; I'll have to pull this album out again and give it another spin.

It gave me a headache

It just seemed to go nowhere, repeating riffs over and over, but the riffs didnt seem good enough to be repeated over and over

Maybe its because some things i read made me think i would be hearing red sparowes or God is an astronaut LOL

I'll give it another spin, right now :)

EDIT: I must have been in the wrong mood when i first listened to it (maybe i was listening as i was falling asleep), because this is really quite excellent :dio:

I think the repetition works well, its like having a vice slowly tightened around your skull

I hope my review didn't give you that impression. If so, my apologies. There is absolutely, positively no post-rock sound on this album. I'm glad you're starting to come around on it, though.

actually mostly when magazines go "band x sounds like neurosis", and they do that a lot. Neurosis is one of the favourite namedrops when mags try to describe a bands sound.

I think it's they're pretty influential. And now that Mastodon, the most blatantly Neurosis-influenenced band are the hot shit, there's going to be a lot of copycats

I think the former part of my signature describes this album pretty well...

The triple vocal assualt at the end of Locust Star is wicked...

How do Mastodon sound like Neurosis at all? I've only heard Enemy of the Sun (the album), but what the hell. Mastodon are pretty fast, chaotic, loud, and screamy. Neurosis are slow, ethereal, mind-infecting music that is only brought to its full greatness whilst under the influence of illicit drugs.

I don't think Mastodon are clones by any means, but if you listen to Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace, it becomes pretty obvious that they took a huge cue from Neurosis in creating their sound.
