how come this mediocre album got ClASSIC status, and extreme agression didnt?
Although Eyesore and DM very eloquently put it into to plain view, Ill just add my two cents.
I would say that the reason is a basis of influence. Although both Extreme Aggression and Burn My Eyes are awesome records, Burn My Eyes, as an album, has had a much larger impact and influence on a genre and bands that came after it. Whether that genre or those bands are good or not, thusly making the influences positive/negative in ones mind, is purely a matter of taste and opinion, making the subject completely irrelevant when considering an albums "Classicness" (watch out for the nifty slice of self-contradiction coming ahead).
This is the difference-maker that I myself consider when trying to make the painful and challenging borderline between albums that are "just" fan-fuckinübersupermarvellousawesome-tastic, and albums that are simply one notch above, in other words "Classic". The factor of influence on a scene, on a genre, on an audience. I know I always dont get it right, as Im the first to admit that Iced Earth's Alive In Athens triple-live isnt the most influential record around, but it just is so damn GOOD. Besides, here in Finland we have a saying, "Poikkeus vahvistaa säännön." ("The exception verifies the rule")
Of course, everything said above is my opinion, view and method, and mine alone. Im not speaking for anyone else, or claiming that I could. Feel free to support it or not.
