WOW! Nice novel dude. Now that I know your life story I think I'll check this album out. Seriously, that was a nice review. I've never heard anything by these guys, but I am checking out the audio tracks and the video tracks right now.

Yeah, I try to make my reviews a little more personal to kind of give it more life, you know? Sorry if that's annoying to anyone. Hahaha. Anyway, this CD is phenomenal. The clips really do it no justice, but there's nothing else out there. I'm surprised I even found those on Sean's site. The video clip is a better representation and if you can watch it and understand it's basically a bootleg then you can probably get a good idea of what they're like.

I'm serious, I hated this band the first time I heard it. It wasn't music to me, I found nothing good about it. That's simply how stubborn and ignorant I was at the time because it literally blew my mind the second time around. Words betray the album, hearing it is the only way to truly understand how good it is.

Of course, you may hate it, though. It's quite a big pill to swallow. And for those that will argue it, yes, this is a classic! I questioned whether or not to make it a classic so I went-a-surfing on the net. I could not find one bad review about this album anywhere, not one. CLASSIC.

Check out the Æon Spoke link, too, if you dig on weird, experimental rock music like those bands I mentioned. They're very good.

Definitely a classic, nice to see it mentioned (though I still think I prefer Atheist).

The robot vocals still bug me though. They don't kill the album by any means, but it's just...like wtf.

The comparisons to Atheist are just, but I think Cynic were definitely on a different level. I love the flanged vocals, that was part of what made them so damn good. Yeah, it's over-indulgent and not a typical way to utilize vocal effects, but no one ever did it that much and that, the clean vocals and the death metal vocals just mixed so well. Not many bands could make that work.

I just tried to win an auction for one of their demos the other day, the thing had 20 minutes to go and it was up to $12.72. I would have paid $50 easy. What happens? I'm at work and I get stuck on a call and completely forget! The fucking thing sold for $12.72! Jebus Christ! That sucked.

EDIT: I fixed the Æon Spoke link, if anyone tried it and got an error.

Another excellent review, Ken!

Good work, Ken. For me this album is still more of a novelty than something enjoyable to listen to, though. I also prefer Atheist, but it's nice to see it reviewed.

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually like these vocals. Nothing special, but they do fit the music. By the way, listen to Gordian Knot. It's essentially Cynic continued (most of te members are in that band) but without vocals so those of you who were put off by them may enjoy thier stuff.

Gordion Knot are cool, but not really the same. They've expanded upon elements that they used in Cynic—as they did with Aeon Spoke, Anomaly and Aghora—but I don't think people who enjoy Cynic would necessarily like those bands, especially Gordion Knot because they're an instrumental band. Good, though.

Musically this album is killer but the vocals can annoy me a bit.

This album always gets a lot of press because basically its a pretty strange trip. Musically its a mix of prog and death and atmospeherics and the vocal effects so often commented about.
At times it sounds very dated then at other times it sounds otherworldly. It is one of those albums that is really beyond description. It is without a doubt a classic. But still in my opinion Control and Resistance by Watchtower blows it away. Still an amazing and bizzare album, we will perhaps never see its like again. There was definitely something in the Florida air that decade.

I found these on Roadrunner's page!

VEIL OF MAYA :dio:
HOW COULD I :dio:

Man, I hope they record a new album after this upcoming tour! If they could achieve anything close to Focus it would be amazing!

Definitely on my top 5 albums of all times list. This album sure deserves to be placed in the hall of fame! Their newest release is also a great runner up. Cynic is great, and so is Cynicism!

The robot vocals may not do it for everyone but the tone of the guitar is what makes this album so memorable to me. They have that in common with Atheist..
