Nicely done Zad, an absolutely deserved classic. I love this album, probably my favorite by Enslaved. Seriously, have they ever sucked? I say no. Between you and me, we should gradually fill in the rest of their catalog not represented on MR, they certainly deserve it if you ask me.

*has a serious lack of Enslaved in his collection*

I'm very ashamed of myself.

Sounds like a plan. I'll have to get more by them, still not got Frost, Eld, Isa or Monumension...

From what I've heard so far, Blodhemn's their only sub-par moment. A kickass album, but it feels a bit rushed.

And Scott, start here! Get the Candlelight reissue with Hordanes Land as a bonus CD, well worth it.

The only one I don't have is Mardraum and the Satyricon split :dio:

This is such an awesome album :dio:

Mardraum is effing great, probably my second favorite. You'll love it, bump that up on your to-buy list. I still haven't heard the Satyricon split yet.

Sweet. :)

Also, excellent review Zad :dio: One of the best classics on the site :dio:

Oh, and i don't think Bloodhemn is a slip up at all. I think its one of the best 'straight' viking albums ever.

A well deserved classic indeed. This record never ceases to amaze me. Everyone with even the remotest interest in Black Metal should check out this masterpiece... Vetrarnótt is so freakin' awesome...

That is a pretty sweet deal! Considering the awesomeness of Hordanes Land as well, it is almost two classics for the price of one. If I didn't have them both this is what I would buy.

Well, not entirely serious... I'm not enough of an elitist to be mad about their departure from Black Metal.. I just feel that they somehow gave up their unique spirit and started to replace their more 'emotional' qualities with the different kind of creativity of prog. Those two can supplement each other really well, but I feel that Enslaved's sound suffered from the more 'listenable' approach of Eld and onwards. And the later stuff has almost completely lost the authencity and power of the early works. The newer material is allright from a musical perspetive, but I just think that they sacrificed to much of their mucis's special 'power' through their progression.

And thanks  :dio:

I think Below the Lights is at least as good as, maybe even better than Vikingligr Veldi. Anyway, i don't even get why it works, but every change Enslaved make from album to album, they never piss me off. Each album is unique and powerful, rather than treading the territory or pompous wankery or selling out.

Oh, I don't consider it pompous wankery *cough*Emperor*cough* or selling out. I just don't think they changed for the better over the years. Of course they couldn't stay with their original style forever, as it would probably grow old, but their newer style(s) just don't hit the same primeval spots in the soul. They seems to be more interested in the musical delivery than the overall nature of the music.. At least I think so..

I love everything by these guys. No they have never sucked. But I've come to like their newer stuff more than the older.

I don't understand how any black metal can be pompous wankery, but whatever...this looks really cool. I have Ruun and like it, and although the vocals aren't my favorite, I'll have to check this out.
