i dunno, the majority of the songs don't even have any growling. the only song i'd consider more death metal than prog on Watershed is "Heir Apparent". it wouldseem weird to me if Watershed was called the best death metal album of the year :\

I agree that Watershed has overwhelmingly more progressive elements than death metal.

or Scar Symmetry

Yeah, come on people, Melodeath is Melodeath, however good it is. I think to get the 'Prog' label there has to be real steps in that direction.

Scar Symmetry has sufficient enough "progressive" stylings on "Holographic Universe" to have it heavily considered as a progressive metal album. I personally don't see how you can't detect it. Scar Symmetry is certainly an eclectic mix of styles and genres but I feel to stereotype them into one category such as melodic/death would be a n insufficient description of the bands material.

Yes, but we could have this discussion about any band that mixed two or more genres. No-one likes to pigeonhole, but we do have to put bands where they fit best, and I think they're more Melodeath than they are Prog Metal, on the Melodeath/Prog Metal spectrum.

I put my "Top 5" list on both the 'Power' and 'Prog' threads, as most of the CDs on the list could easily belong in either thread.

Also, I believe Armory's 'The dawn of enlightenment' is actually a late-2007 release, otherwise it would have been on my list in the #2 spot.
:D

damn! It got released on dec 27th of last year. So when do the metal voting polls close? i mean if an album got released really late, shouldn't it be carried over to the next year?

I'd say that about Cynic too.

What's not progressive about Scar Symmetry? I would much rather have someone engage in a conversation about the merits of whether the band has progressive characteristic in their music than run with the standard  emoticon to then give off the impression that I'm somehow deficient in my selection.

Nothing personal but I just didn't deemed it necessary to elaborate on to why Scar Symmetry don't belong in prog. To me it's not even a question whether Scar Symmetry should be in prog or in any other category other that death. Hey, I'm also having trouble figuring out where some of the "hybrid" bands belong to (Equilibrium, Battlelore for example) but I'm certainly not putting Amon Amarth in power if you know what I mean.

Well that's daft.

Actually, I disagree. 3 of the 5 bands I listed could be considered progressive metal by some and power metal by others.

And Operatika aren't Prog.

I agree, and the other one on my list that for sure isn't prog is Dawn of Destiny.
:)

Can you not seperate them?

I'm requesting that you please DELETE my list in the 'Prog' thread. Thanks, and sorry for the confusion guys... I guess progressive power metal CDs ended up being my favorite this year, and I'll put them all in the 'Power' thread.

Yeah. Plus there's very little black metal on the new Enslaved, and virtually no death metal on the new Cynic. All 3 belong to the progressive genre. It may be extreme progressive, but it's still progressive. This goes for Ihsahn and other stuff too.

i haven't heard Enslaved, but yeah the new Cynic isn't death metal either; it should go in either prog or avant-garde imo

I was going to put Opeth in Avant-Garde until I saw so many people put it in prog. I think it could go in either though. Doesn't matter to me.

Well, there needs to be clarification before voting is over.

I've got Enslaved in black, Opeth in Death and I was going to put Cynic and Ihsahn in Prog. But we need a consensus with these 4 bands.

I think that there is a certain bottom line here, and that sticking Opeth and Enslaved in with Prog seems to suggest that any band with prog can get in there. I'd say Enslaved are still Black enough, and Opeth Death enough, to have them in their respective genres. Prog shouldn't be an 'everthing else' kinda pigeonhole.

Conversely, Cynic and Ihsahn should go in Prog Metal since they're more Prog than not, if you get me. I realise there's a lot of room for debate on all four, but this needs to be sorted, as NESSster said. Does anyone have a serious objection to having it like I said?

Edited myself accordingly. Saddens me that I have no room for Enslaved in my black metal list.

Whereas on Ihsahn AngL are more pure Black Metal songs, like pure Death Metal songs on Opeth's current album. So I think AngL is more black than Watershed death metal...

What about an progressive extreme metal voting thread?
 There can be voted for everything progressive that has growls, screams, grunts and other extreme vocals and riffs. E.G. Into Eternity would be another contender for that genre. They are using power metal like vocals, progressive harmonies but also extreme death metal grunts und riffs and even blast beats.

Probably doom but they seem too cheery or positive for doom and they reminded me of Sabbath so I put them in the Heavy Metal section.

Can we get everything into the right section, please? Opeth into Death, etc. Voting closes in a matter of hours.
