(And yes, I'm aware the vocals are dreadful. I have ears.)

What's the deal with vocals only coming in on one channel on some pressings of this album? Was that a mistake or something? I'm always baffled when someone chooses to mix them that way.

Burnt Offerings is their best, Night of the stormrider has two good songs and sucks as a whole album

Anyway, I like almost everything they've done and it's difficult for me to count out, for instance, Horror Show. I know most people don't like it for some reason, but I think it's 90% awesome.

I almost said that one, it is probably my second favorite. Yeah the cheese on a few tracks ('ghost of freedom') is almost unbearable, but then again, this is Iced Earth.

I think I'd make a compilation of the heaviest tracks from Horror Show (thinking Wolf and Jack) and Days of Purgatory (heh, sorry, can't stand the vocals from the first two), add Burnt Offerings, Last December and Dante's Inferno, and then call it a day.

I only have this and Dark Saga sitting around and got bored with Stormrider quickly. It was mediocre Pantera worship to me. Funny how many bands took Pantera's Cowboys from Hell and remade it in every respect except the songwriting was no where on that level.

Dear mother of all you can be quite stupid sometimes

I would say their best over-all album is Burnt Offerings, however in terms of what album do I come back to the most? Honestly, I think Horror Show is the one that has gotten the most spins from me. It is just such a dense and dynamic album, not just from a metal stand point (like BO), but from a story telling standpoint. I liked that he got away from all of the fantasy driven ideas and tapped into something fresh (for them anyways).

And Damien is a fucking vicious song, even more so live. :dio:

I haven't listened to their entire discography, but so far, I like Horror Show the most.

Yeah, Damien worked as a bit of a cheese song (unlike Phantom Opera Ghost...) because the heavy parts are so very great. Seems like Horror Show is a tad underrated, judging by the number of people here that seemed to like it.

Glorious Burden has grown on me as well. Took a few years to get over my initial reaction, but listening to it now I get more from it.

Lightning strikes, it's the witching hour

The monstrosity comes alive

A victim of man's vanity

Born in delirium, a deranged child

Ha, sorry I missed that one out. But now I don't want to delete it, it's too funny.

These days I'm digging Dystopia.

The only Iced Earth album I own (which is also the only one I've ever heard) is SWTWC.

I don't dislike it, but when I bought it a few years ago I was not so impressed that I wanted to buy more albums. However, I'm now on kind of a power metal kick so I want to give them another chance.

Recommendations on next purchase, please, keeping in mind I thought SWTWC was ok but it didn't blow me away.

Really...?

I mean, i'll definitely give it a shot if that's what you think, but it seems to me like a re-recording album is usually more of a curiosity for established fans than a good starting place for a newbie.

Days of Purgatory is where I started, although, now that I think about it, maybe Alive in Athens is an even better place to start. But if you're going for a studio album, I guess Burnt Offerings is a good choice.

Cool. Yeah, I'm a studio recording kind of guy, at least for getting into a band. Alright I'll give Burnt Offerings a shot and if I like it better than SWTWC I'll explore further.
