Post subject:  Hit or Miss: Dream Theater - Train Of Thought

Seeing as to how people either absolutely love this album or absolutely hate it (I'm in the former catagory, lucky for Dream Theater), I thought I'd poll this board to see what everybody else thinks.

And putting this in the "Prog/Power/True Metal" forum took a little thought since whether or not Dream Theater is really a "metal band" is a little debatable.

How is Dream Theater not metal?

Hit, SoC = best instrumental ever, imo.

I think Dream Theatre's forte is melodic prog.. at this style they are one of many.

Hit. Definately.

It was a change of pace for them, but it was still a really fucking good album.

Dream Theater is about as metal as Alice in Chains IMO. Which is to say, they're sort of in that gray area between rock and metal.

100% hit. My first listen was a complete miss, but after about three more listens Train of Thought became one of my top Dream Theater albums.

Btw, Dream Theater are most certainly metal.

A big-time miss for me. I could go on for ages if I described all the reasons this album has destroyed my appetite for Dream Theater, including the albums previous to it, which at one time represented the majority of my favorite music

For me, not really a hit nor a miss... in the grey zone.
Octavarium is a real miss.

Definite hit for me, although I'm a Dream Theater hater. This album is the only one I can listen in full without getting bored (well i still get bored at some time). In The Name Of God is actually a great song and it didn't took me 10 listens to realize that.

A most definite hit. Not their best album but still a great one.

MISS MISS MISS! 70 minutes of utterly boring, self-indulgent, sleep-inducing wank bullshit. The worst fucking album from the most overrated band in metal.

No. As I said I find them grossly overrated, but I must admit that I & W is a good album. It has my favourite DT song (Surrounded) and theur two best epics (Learning to Live and Metropolis). But after that they got more and more boring and on ToT they just went completely off the road imo.

Yes I have, several times actually. I & W clicked after a few spins, ToT just don't.
