Post subject:  The most influential band in creating black/thrash/death.

When I listen to thrash/death/black metal a thought arises at times, I have always wondered what common ancestor the genres share. In creating this topic I'm hoping to draw out differing opinions, as I'm sure most of the forumites here will immediately state Sabbath. Not denying Sabbath's influence on all of metal, I have to wonder if it's salient enough to warrant the shocking amount of diversity with the music. It is this discrepancy in terms of the wide array of sound, that makes me wonder what bands catapulted their sound to become the benchmark of black/death metal. I'm eager to read your thoughts on the subject, and I'm hoping that some of the older posters will bring to light their impressions of differing scenes that may have played apart in creating the music.

Diamondhead, Venom, Bathory, to their respective genres. Venom I could see replacing for dm.

I'd add Death, but, yeah. This.

I chose Possessed over Death, but it could of went either way.

Yeah, I only mentioned Death due to a more prolific output.
Technically, Possessed came first.

I actually agree with this but even with more prolific output, Death set the precedent for at least being influential on the genre. I don't credit them with being the first death metal band, but their influence on the genre should never be questioned. Possessed on the other hand were far more vicious than Death, and even now I prefer their material to anything post-"Human".

I agree with this.
Though post - Human Death is at least on a par with Possessed (Seven Churches)... Schuldiner really was a gifted musician / songwriter.
My favorite Death will always be Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy, though.

The first band that I thought of was, as mentioned earlier, Possessed. I can't really think of any other band, besides the ones that were mentioned.
