Post subject:  Top 10 thrash bands

I need to know what are the top 10 thrash bands prior to 1989 in terms of popularity and dissemination, not quality. Like the list should look something like this:

1 Metallica
2 Slayer
3 Megadeth
4 Anthrax
5 Testament
...

Like did folks in the 80s know about Sepultura and Sodom? Did people listen to Kreator and Overkill? The thing I'm trying to avoid is the praising of someone like Artillery who didn't get much listens, but which we look back to as being awesome. I know this is an odd request, but I also know you guys know much more about thrash than I do. Plus some of you guys are old enough to be firsthand sources.

Folks in the 80s were definitely aware of the big 3 German bands. I don't know about North America specifically, but Kreator and Destruction were playing dates all over Europe and opening for some pretty huge acts.

EDIT: Dark Angel were definitely well known in North American metal circles after Darkness Descends, and if you look towards the last couple of years of the 80s, I'd say Suicidal Tendencies would definitely be on the list after the they switched to a thrashier sound, and Death Angel would probably make it onto the list as well.

Coroner wasn't big, but they toured with Kreator/Tankard/Sabbat a few times back in the day.

Oh man, what a concert that would be.

Overkill I'd say was definitely well known. Suicidal Tendencies, Exodus, hmm... this is tough.

Fucking hell....how could I forget Exodus.

Death Angel really?

My initial reaction would have been to include Sepultura, but they didn't release Beneath till 89.

I'm assuming bottom five could include Kreator and Sodom, but was probably more West Coast bands or well, just more American bands actually.

Beat you to the punch on both bands! :P

I was thinking both of the Angels, but didn't think they'd be top 10 worthy for this sort of list. But if they can make it then so can Forbidden, Heathen, maybe Vio-lence? Nuclear Assault? Annihilator? Flotsam & Jetsam?

Annihilator didn't release Alice until 89.

Edit: Or maybe thrash wasn't as big as I was thinking it was from '83 to '89 and I need to adjust the date back.

Oh man idk. I could be wrong about how popular Nuclear Assault was but... if Destruction goes on there, I'd drop the ten spots maybe.

Both bands had three albums prior 1989. I think it depends of the country you lived in. Euros would have more exposure to Destruction in the 80's.

Is it funnier because the Mexican called the Mexican American a dishwasher or is it just a funny insult in and of itself?

Oh. My mistake. I wouldn't normally reduce those ethnicities to Mexican. I guess I presumed since you live in the Southwest that you must be Mexican since you're brown. Now, it is even funnier that the Mexican called you a dishwasher.
