Quote:
According to Dagbladet.no, members of the legendary Norwegian black metal band IMMORTAL are involved in a legal dispute over the IMMORTAL trademark. The group's frontman Abbath (real name Olve Eikemo) has attempted to claim rights to the IMMORTAL name via his sole proprietorship Eikemo Compositions. The application has been stopped by a lawyer representing lyricist/guitarist Demonaz (real name Harald Nævdal) and drummer Horgh (real name Reidar Horghagen), who want the IMMORTAL trademark to be shared by all three members.

Weak of Abbath if true.

In this situation shouldn't they all be fighting to the death atop snow covered mountains during the middle of a Norwegian blizzard?

In all seriousness, I never would have expected this kind of bullshit from Immortal given how chill they are in comparison to many of their peers. Say it ain't so, Abbath.

Update on the Immortal copyright business:

http://www.metalinjection.net/latest-news/breakups/abbath-claims-other-members-of-immortal-quit-the-band

Sounds like Abbath is frustrated with the lack of output and wants to patent the name so he doesn't have to wait on the other guys. Even though Demonaz doesn't play with the band anymore, he is still an original member and has written the vast majority of Immortal's lyrics, which should entitle him to a share of the name. With the number of years these two have worked together, you'd figure they could have worked something out that didn't involve a lawsuit.

Next Album Title: Legal Battles in the North

Doesn't look like the court agreed that Immortal = Abbath. Be interesting if the other members try and continue with Immortal, but it sounds like a decent solution if they're happy with it...

Just read the Metal Hammer interview with Abbath. Immortal, as of right now, is done. According to the man, Demonaz and Horgh were not showing up for scheduled band rehearsal and recording sessions which was greatly dragging out the release date for the new album. Abbath said he knew both guys had families and tried being patient with them but, after months of delays, he had finally had enough. This is what precipitated the name grab. Even though he didn't win the lawsuit, Abbath said he is moving forward with his solo band and new music will be forthcoming. Currently putting together an English tour where the band will play new songs, a few tracks from the "I" record and some Immortal classics. Lucky you, Zaddy!

Would be nice to not have a 20 year wait in between Immortal albums

Looks like you won't have to, because they're carrying on without Abbath!

Sure to end well for all concerned.

Ugh, this is a disappointing story. I used to think Immortal was a paragon for bands sticking together with Demonaz still writing for the band after his injury, but they seem like the opposite. Immortal without Abbath at this point just sounds bad.

You can't really call it Immortal without him to be honest. Demonaz needs to continue with his solo stuff and just lay the band to rest...for now.

Yeah, Abbath at one point or another played everything: bass, drums, guitar, and all the vocals. I realize Demonanz was integral to the founding of the band but he has done nothing besides write lyrics since 1997.
