I'm fairly new to teh Doom Metalz, and am looking to really expand my knowledge of the genre. Would anyone care to name off a few choice favorite bands for me? I like traditional bands just fine (Solitude Aeternus is amazing), but I also like the more epic, melodic side of the genre (While Heaven Wept, Wine From Tears). Not so much into funeral doom, but I'm open to anything.

That. I'd add Isole, DoomSword, Jex Thoth, Gates Of Slumber, Yob & old Trouble to that list.

Skepticism and Evoken. They're a lot more forgiving than other, more extreme funeral doom bands, so you might like them in that respect.

I can't really get into the genre because its really plodding and dull, but the best two recommendations I've received from everyone on the forum are dISEMBOWELMENT and I'm kind of warming up to Candlemass. But other then that pretty much just Eyehategod.

Memory Garden. Very underrated band.

If you dig Robert Lowe, check out Last Chapter (http://www.myspace.com/lastchap). He did vocals for their demo and first album. But the second album is excellent as well.

Also check out Las Cruces (http://www.myspace.com/lascruces). Very killer band, with a very different kind of singer for doom metal. Their new album was just released this week on Brainticket Records. Can't wait until it arrives.

And while we're discussing all things related to Solitude Aeturnus, check out Elliot's Keep (http://www.myspace.com/elliottskeep; they're another killer doom band that John Perez released on Brainticket.

Oh, and check out Concept of God (http://www.myspace.com/conceptofgod), too. This is Robert Lowe's side-project. They lean a bit more toward the heavy metal side of things, but there's plenty of doom.

If you like Reverend Bizarre, you'll probably love Sleep.

If you like Cathedral, you'll probably love Witchfinder General.

For some latest stuff, if you like Reverend Bizarre and newer Candlemass, check out Spiritus Mortis' latest album.

If you want a little bit a drone in your doom, the new Dark Castle album is great.

+1 on Sleep. Dopesmoker is epic. Now that I think about it, if you haven't heard Electric Wizard's Dopethrone that's the best stoner-doom album.

Nobodies collection is complete without some Pentagram.

I don't think any of these are traditional or straightforward Doom
but they certainly fit in the category IMO.

Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure
Swallow The Sun - The Mourning Never Came
Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion
Sins Of Thy Beloved - Lake of Sorrow

I forgot about Thergothon. Released just one studio album, Stream From The Heavens. You might want to check that out too.

I want to add Runemagick to the list here, they are a criminally underrated doom/death band that has some of the best riffs and atmosphere i've ever heard.

Seriously folks, check them out, they deserve more attention

No one mentioned Umbra Nihil, or Dolorian, so I will.
