I was listening to Paradise Lost's Icon and it amazes me how much better they sound than on say Lost Paradise or Gothic.

I really put it down to the fact that they got rid of the growling and replaced it with a more Hetfield-esque approaching by giving it a more dynamic vibe.

I always found Gothic and Lost Paradise a bit dull and monotone - in the end I got rid of both of them. Even the modern non-growly versions of the older stuff on The Anatomy of Melancholy sounds better without a more clean sung approach.

Icon, Draconian Times (this might have the most of the 3 mentioned), even In Requiem are light if not entirely lacking on the growls and better for it.

The vocals improved, agreed. However, Mackintosh's guitar tone was the best on Gothic, and I only ever listened to Paradise Lost for his sound.

totally depends on what you (generally) prefer or even your mood at the moment.

Icon is a great album, but sometimes i just can't stand it (exept "Christendom" which is an absolute masterpiece).
Anyway Gothic was always my first choice.

I'm rather partial to the last two albums 'Faith Divides...' and 'In Requiem'.

I've liked everything Paradise Lost have released from One Second onwards, even Host was pretty good. Their last 2 albums are a nice combination of old and new, but my favourite era is the S/T album, Symbol Of Life and Believe In Nothing

My favorite album is probably faith divides us. Like was said before a perfect mix of old and new
