I don't think he was trying to sound like anything except a drunk Mancunian... something he could do quite effectively.

Oasis were trying to sound like The Beatles.

And failed miserably.

Yes. Well, not sure if miserably, but fail.

Blur >>> Oasis.

That goes without saying...

But also
Supergrass >>> Oasis
Kula Shaker >>> Oasis
The Boo Radleys >>> Oasis
Pulp >>> Oasis
The Verve >>> Oasis
etc.

Pulp is far better than Oasis. I prefer Supergrass to Oasis, but perhaps it's a matter of taste. Oasis & The Verve, imo, tied. Kula Shaker & The Boo Radleys are inferior to Oasis.

All IMO, of course.

Yeah, that was pretty stupid.

How's that stupid? Particularly, being that Kurt Cobain cited the Beatles as one of his biggest influences, it shouldn't be too surprising that there'd be some overlap in their vocal styles. Plus, Oasis has cited both Nirvana and The Beatles as being among their biggest musical influences.

Yeah, but Cobain also said Celtic Frost was an influence and if he ever started going UGH! in a song I'd have remembered.

I don't think Nirvana were that big an influence on Oasis. I'd welcome evidence to the contrary but I think Oasis thought Nirvana were twats. e.g.

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/st ... na_1029853

Quote:
OASIS rocker NOEL GALLAGHER wrote uplifting hit song LIVE FOREVER after he became depressed listening to US band NIRVANA. Gallagher admits he wrote the track in the mid 90s after he heard a particularly downbeat Nirvana song. He reveals, "It was written in the middle of the grunge and all that and I remember Nirvana had a tune called I Hate Myself And I Want To Die and I was like 'Well, I'm not having that.' "I can't have people like that coming over here, on smack, saying that they hate themselves and they wanna die. That's just rubbish." Live Forever was recently voted as the Greatest Indie Anthem of all time by British music magazine NME.

Live Forever is a better tune than anything Nirvana could ever have dreamed of writing.

Seinfeld, if you're still interested, this thread was really helpful for me.

Ahhhh, Oasis is one of my favorite bands ever. I quite loved a lot of Britpop bands. I love Liam's vocals and I love every one of their albums.

Oasis > Blur > Pulp = The Boo Radleys > Supergrass = The Verve > Kula Shaker?

I think something like that. However there were much better bands around at that time than Supergrass and Kula Shaker. I also never really got much into The Verve.

I like Enuff Z'Nuff. I think the weed has gone to Chip's head a bit, but they are far better than Oasis.

Oasis, overproduced? Hah.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. How fucking retarded are you?

It's alright, Fridge, Oasis aren't from Scotland, you don't need to defend them.
