I'm thinking of picking up their first two albums (Definitely Maybe and What's The Story Morning Glory). What does everybody else here think of them?

What's The Story (Morning Glory) is one of the best albums ever recorded in the history of music.

No it isn't, Frigid, don't be ridiculous.

Having said that, whilst you will probably be scoffed by a lot of folks at for getting into Oasis, they are actually a really good rock band on their better works, with some top class tunes. Definitely Maybe is their best- better than What's the Story.

Gahh. De gustibus non disputandem est, of course, but What's The Story just has classic tune after classic tune, with no filler at all, which isn't the case with Definitely Maybe. From Hello to Champagne Supernova, every song is absolutely brilliant. And it makes for great campfire singing as well. PLEEEAAASE DON'T PUT YOUR LIFE IN THE HAAAAAANDS, OF A ROCK AND ROLL BAAAAAND, THEY'LL THROW IT ALL AWAAAAYYYY.

No, the tunes are much better on DM. That's just a scientific fact. WTSMG has no Cigs and Alcohol, no SLide Away, no Rock n Roll star... Champagne Supernova is a great tune though.

WTSTMG has Hello, Don't Look Back In Anger, Cast No Shadow, Wonderwall, Roll With It, She's Electric, Morning Glory, Some Might Say... Ah, you get the picture. No filler at all- except for Swamp Song Excerpts, but those are meant to be interludes. U.U

I liked Champagne Supernova/Wonderall when they first came out .. but now I have an allergic reaction whenever I hear Liam's nasal whiny little spoiled rock star voice croaking at me.

I still like Champagne Supernova, but everything I find ruined by those vocals.

I burned my brother's copy of (What's The Story) Morning Glory and listened to it at work this afternoon. I must say, I'm actually impressed. This is one of the tightest and most organic mainstream rock albums I've ever listened to. As for Gallagher's vocals, he was just doing what almost every rock vocalist was doing at the time: trying to sound like Kurt Cobain. Something even otherwise-respected vocalists like Thom Yorke have been guilty of doing at some point (just listen to Optimistic or Paranoid Android for details).

Liam Gallagher was trying to sound like Kurt Cobain??!

I don't think he was trying to sound like anything except a drunk Mancunian... something he could do quite effectively.

Oasis were trying to sound like The Beatles.

Oasis were trying to sound like The Beatles.

And failed miserably.
