I have been working through their discography, and plan on doing some reviews in the future so thought I would open up this thread for some feedback.

What do you think are the high points and low points of Aerosmith?

(Keep in mind that before they became stupid popular, and Steven Tyler became a cartoon character, these guys were a great classic rock band and quite original).

I prefer 70's Aerosmith vs their 80's stuff onward. Their self titled album,Rocks and Toys In The Attic are classics.

But they became too poppy during the 80's and still sound too poppy for my taste now.

I'll risk everyone's wrath by saying they are waaaaay overrated and did nothing that the Rolling Stones didn't do better and earlier.

LOL, no wrath but definitely disagree. Maybe I just had more of an Aerosmith influence than Stones, but their early material is untouchable. Songs like Kings and Queens, Lord of the Thighs, and Toys in the Attic are just classic stuff (and songs that today's generation probably dont even know exist).

Their 80's material isnt nearly as good, but still decent. 90's is when they jumped off the cliff (think Pink off of 9 Lives). Get a Grip had some redeeming moments.

If you want a solid collection of their classic material without the newer BS, I would recommend Pandora's Box. Great collection.

Then i'd like to know which Rolling Stones album can compare to Get Your Wings, Rocks,Draw the Line or Pump.

And by the way, they may be overrated, but very little overrated compared to bands like Metallica and Slayer.

In quality? Plenty. In sound? I'd have to relisten to said Aerosmith albums.

Get Your Wings, Toys In The Attic, Rocks and even Draw The Line
are top drawer. Especially Rocks. One of the few albums that I can listen to and still get as jacked as the first time I heard it, way waaay back in 1976.
As for the Stones comparison, I gotta disagree with that in a big way.
Aerosmith in their drug addled prime makes the Stones sound soft and downright wholesome.

If anything Stones are way overrated themselves. Mick Jagger sucks on the vox and Keith Richards well I say Joe Perry is a much better guitarist then him.

Early Aerosmith>Stones, in my very humble opinion.

I'm aware that won't be a popular opinion round here. Maybe it's because I grew up with them, parents being fans, and Aerosmith have never really done it for me. Doubtless I'll try the 'smiths in a year or so and fall in obnoxious love.

I agree with this. Beggars Banquet(68),Let it Bleed(69),Sticky Fingers(71) and Exile on Main Street(72) are indeed awesome...but they sound nothing like Rocks or Get Your Wings, imo.

As I mentioned earlier, check out Pandora's box. Basically its a collection of their best material, with nothing from the late 80's and on. Plus some really good live cuts. Im not a fan of Steven Tyler as he is now, but there is no question he was a charasmatic frontman. Ill also start doing my homework on the stones, whom I dont have much experience with.

I dig the Stones quite a bit (especially the Mick Taylor years, the best guitarist they've had, IMO), but I have to somewhat agree that the first five years of Aerosmith's career are at least as good if not a little better than The Stones.

Brad Whitford is actually the more technically proficient axeman.
But it's not so much Perry vs. Whitford, as each of their styles compliments the others perfectly.

Yo, Goat, a coupla slices from both Get Your wings and Rocks, their two best IMO:

Works every time

And Steven Tyler is a rather underrated lyricist, if you ask me.

The Stones are a difficult band to compare album-wise, because they were infamous for having some atrocious filler. Hits-wise, they are second to none.

Aerosmith is a good band, so entering into a vs. conversation gives the false impression of a loser.

My only complaint about their early stuff is much of it is too bluesy (in a cliched way) for my taste, I like my 70s hard rock more like Led Zep or Rush. However the hits (like all blues based acts) transcend. Also, their influence on 80s hair metal/sleaze rock would solidify their place in history alone.
