Any fans of this man, his main band and/or his solo project on this board? Personally I've always found both Dire Straits and his solo project a bit inconsistent, with many great songs but also a lot of filler. But he's easily one of my favorite lead guitarists, of any genre. He has a unique style and tone and puts a lot of feeling into his solos. His performance on the title track of "Brothers in Arms" is simply one for the ages.

Yes Dire Straits rock :dio: with Brothers In Arms being their best record.

I like Dire Straits especially the debut album where Knopfler brought a Chet Atkins technique into a rockier environment. Communiqué is but a replica (albeit a nice one). The more ethereal material on the following albums was quite nice too and Brother in Arms, though a more commercial release, has a handful of great songs (The Man's Too Strong and the title track in particular).
Also, Alchemy is a great live album.
Too bad the band left on such a low note with their final album.
As for Mark's solo stuff, there's good stuff but it's highly uneven to say the least.

Saw Knopfler live a couple of years ago.. Played a few classic tunes which was nice, because his solo-material is mostly boring.

The Dire Straits anthem song is awesome one.
