I have one album from him "Hot Rats" and I enjoy it. He's a bit weird this Zappa, but the song with Beefheart is one of a kind. hehe.

I think he is pure genius.

He is one of the most original guitar players of all time.
He is great satirist (from pubertal pornography trough anarchistic clownery to serious political cabaret) who sometimes makes me laugh my ass off.
He has a great sylistic diversity (contemporary classical, jazz, rock) like noonne else, but still sounds coherent and distinctive.
A lot of top notch musicians have grown out of his various bands (George Duke, Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, Mike Keneally, to name a few)
He managed to have No1 hits without "selling out" (BTW, I hate this shitty expression - IMHO it is just for elitists who can not stand that their once liked bands now appeal to the masses)
He was the only Western musician who could keep up with Eastern grandmaster L. Shankar (it was a hell of fun how Classical musicians disgraced themselfes to the bones when they tried to play with Shankar).

Fav albums:
Roxy and Elsewhere
Live in New York
Make a Jazz Noise here

I pretty much agree with all of Open Mind's points.

My fave albums at the moment : Over-Nite Sensation, Zoot Allures and Broadway the Hard Way.
