Well, to make use of my new favourite verb, I got totally jewed today. My job has rotating shift patters - two weeks of 8am starts, one week of 8.30, one of 9 and two of 10.30. Last week I was on the 8am sketch and was supposed to be moving on to the 8.30. I arrived in work at 8 only to find out they had fucked around with the shift patterns (I was aware of this but was under the impression it made no chnage to the order) and that I was starting at 10.30. Two and a half hours of sleep stolen. Bastards.

I agree with Kathy on this one. And I don't go in for this apologist "it's your fault a lot of gypsies are dishonest because your society shuns them" stuff. Can a bad upbringing really eradicate a grown person's sense of right and wrong?

Not necessarily, but a person does not have to have their conscience eradicated to become a petty thief. A bad upbringing can undoubtedly encourage potentially good people to break the rules. If there's an entire race of people that are brought up in a way that is so alien to everyone else in the country they live in then I certainly see how they could adopt an "us vs them" attitude. You shouldn't take that as excuse-making: It just seems like common sense to say that there are sociological reasons behind increased criminal behaviour amongst certain ethnic groups- rather than just "well, gypsies are bad..."

Heh, not that anyone here has said that specifically. I just always believe there are deeper reasons behind criminal behaviour when it is highly concentrated amongst certain people, and those reasons deserve consideration whatever they may be.

As Zad already pointed out, the same applies to Jews. When was the last time you heard of a Jewish pickpocket?



Of course. I didn't mean that a person who is born a gypsy is automagically a bad person, i'm not that stupid. I was merely generalizing. Sometimes generalization serves a purpose (in this case it helps to avoid getting robbed).

If this makes me a racist, then fine, call me a racist. Like i give a fuck.

Believe it or not, I can sympathise, and I'm not going to call you a racist at all. Living where I do, I am always concerned about being mugged. It's a multicultural area, but I don't worry when I see anyone of a specific ethinicity, I just worry when I see a large group of youths walking towards me ( :shock: :? ) whatever their genetic makeup. Of course, this is also a generalization, but common sense (haha) tells me that if I were to go about shouting about how bad young people are, and how they should be avoided, then that would only make things much worse- a case of "us vs them". I hope you dig what I'm trying to say: that's why I think DM is justified in criticising people that are always singling out gypsies as untrustworthy by nature. And whatever generalisations we may make on a personal level, allowing them to become widely held as true amongst mainstream society can only be harmful.

Hmm, it seems you are 100% correct about gypsies coming from Asia originally. Really I don't know where my info came from, but obviously the wrong place. Ah well...

I agree. No human being is untrustworthy by nature. As Kathaarian said, there's no such thing as a thieving gene. But i also believe that the culture that you're raised into can affect you, for better or worse, some people more, some less.

And the generalizations i make are purely personal. I'm not organizing hate rallies or anything.
Of course i also acknowledge the fact that no generalization can be 100% true.

i never said that they steal because they're gypsies, but that frankly a good lot of them are rather "shady" people. if you find this generalization offensive, then fine, i don't care.

and yes the issue is more complex than just "they're culture says so" but it's unfair to throw all the blame on society. there are also indian, chinese amd eastern european immigrants and they don't get half the shit gypsies get, and that's for a reason.

like i said before it's not like gypsies say "as a reaction to your racist society, we'll take your wallet, thanks".

I found it moderately amusing, but as with most cases like these I found myself unable to think of an appropriately witty comment to make :x
