I saw Equlibrium the other night. Was pretty good, very 1984. I think the only thing that let the film down a bit was the shit action scenes, just guns for the sake of having guns, utterly pointless. The time spent on thoses scenes would have been better served developing the plot more. But still a good film, 7/10

Exactly, the were really pandering to The Matrix crowd with all that "gun-fu" shit - it was just brain-numbingly stupid. Which is a shame, because I thought it was otherwise a tidy little film (another in my series of "brings out the melancholy when drunk" films). I've been championing Christian Bale's cause since I saw this one.

Great actor, but what the fuck?

The Machinist:

Reign Of Fire:

Reign Of Fire is a kick ass movie, by the way (except the stupid leap o' death at the end).

It's complete bollocks. "How did you learn our language?!" "I listened" Yeah, right.

How did you learn your language?

Not from sitting around a campfire one evening with a bunch of foreigners, that's for damn sure.

Hahaha. Well, I don't think he learned it all in one night, at least I don't the film implied such. I think you're supposed to use your imagination.

Is this the movie that the band I reviewed this week supposedly based some of their stuff on? Is there a Grammaton Cleric in this movie?

I thought it did, but never mind. One of the "Vikings" had this weird helmet, looked like it was from the Crusades or something.

Let's agree to disagree, eh? :)

Something like that. In the future "cleric" means "badass cunt with guns and Matrix moves."

Silent Hill. It started out really well, and stayed true to the game. Then halfway through, it completely falls apart and goes into this whole thing about religious fanatics and just starts droning on in a really uninteresting manner. I was elated at first, but left very disheartened.

I don't get why they chose this film to write about. They should have just used 1984, its better for a start, and it's original. And if they really wanted to write about a film they could at least chose one that isn't blighted by holywoodism's, ie. the perceived need for OTT action scenes. Transporter anyone????

I must admit, I quite enjoyed the second one. Car jumps off roofs and onto others, woooo! I was drunk at the time, mind.

I'd rather we agree that I'm right, but OK...

Another time, maybe? :) I still don't get what made it so good.

I'm biased. If a movie is set in a time before 1930, or has that look (Reign Of Fire, for instance), I'm pretty forgiving. Haha. Although I definitely feel the movie wasn't bad, I thought it was quite good. I know when I'm allowing a movie to reach a certain level of suckage and still giving it a nod, I didn't with The 13th Warrior, I found it to really good.

I know what you mean, I'm generally quite forgiving with period dramas. Although this Marie Antoinette thing with Kirsten Dunst looks terrible!

Yeah, I fear movies that try and inject modern music and stuff to period dramas! WTF? Keep that shit real. A Knight's Tale pulled it off, though, I must admit.

I'll admit to enjoying that. Still, that didn't really have a historical basis (it was NOTHING like the Chaucer!), and took a kid's comedy approach to it (although maybe the fact that I was watching it with family added points, if I was on my own...). Now, doing Marie Antoinette like a rom-com.

Have you seen Just Visiting? That's pretty good, and has my uncle in it (pluggety plug).

Right, no historical storyline, but the setting was long, long ago. Good flick, though. Not sure about Marie Antionette, though. I'll give it a shot. Have you seen Vanity Fair? That movie threw me, I thought it was going to be a chick flick, light comedy, but it was actually pretty dark and not comedic. I was surprised. I liked it.

No, but now that I see the picture I remember the movie. I'll have to look out for it. What does your uncle play in the movie?

Vanity Fair I avoided, because of what you said and, well, it's Reese Witherspoon. Still, she did get an oscar, didn't she, for playing Mrs Cash, so I'll give it a try, based on your recc.

And it's a very small part, he plays the King. His IMDB page is here, and I'm not just saying it was good because he was in it, I really liked it.
