In September there's a gig consisting of 1349, Zyklon and Enslaved headlining, I'm going just for Zyklon at the moment. What Enslaved should I satrt with/what will they be playing live?

Well, I am familiar with all those bands, and I'd only go for Enslaved. Pete, I'd go with "Eld" or "Vikinglir Veldi" for their black viking period and "Isa" or "Below the Lights" for their newer stuff.

Or "Frost" or "Monumension"! You can't really go wrong with them, just don't start with Blodhemn, like I did.

I just got this today. I know this will rule so I didn't really rush it, Enslaved albums are fail-safe for me.

Can't argue with those albums either. The one Enslaved album that I thought was weak was "Mardraum", and even that featured one of Enslaved's best songs ever in "Larger than Time-Heavier than Night".

Indeed. Anyone that likes just about everything the band has released will certainly enjoy this as well.

Finally got it!

And despite what i heard, this is great. After hearing this, i think Isa is definitely the most straightforward of the new enslaved albums. While the riffing here is simple like Isa, it contains more of the guitar and keyboard tones and the atmosphere of Below the Lights

89/100 for me.

Oh cheers, I just looked at this old thread. When I've got a job (shop work for the holidays or something similiar and menial) I'll get like 2 Enslaved albums from differant period. If I hate both of them, damn.

I don't see why you should. You dig early Emperor, no?

Edit: Not that they're similar, but both bands are pretty complex...

Then it would be mainstream, hence not cool.

Playing this now for the second time (you can stream the whole thing free from here), and I must say, wow. Much better than I had thought. It seems more cohesive than BTL. 95 so far, may go up or down a few points.

Obviously it's time to check out this band.

Im not sure it beats BTL, but i definitely like it more than Isa. Its certainly a nice balance of the straight-aheadness of Isa and the atmosphere of BTL.

Yes you should, and you still have a cool sig.

I still like this album less than Isa but I'd rank it nearly equal to BTL. I guess I am the only big Isa fan in this discussion but I still feel that tracks such as Violet Dawning, Bounded By Allegiance and Neogenesis are among the very best material of Enslaved's career.
