But it's in the nature of these films that some people have to be evil to the core. Having some sexy young lay-dees as the evil ones isn't any less unbelievable than anyone else.

Yeah, but just the fact that everyone involved in it on every level was pure e-e-vil. It was just too dumb. Bleh. Cabin Fever was better.

I guess less of the blatant Europhobia would have been nice, but anyhoo...

I got more of an anti-American sentiment out of it. The two American boys were being punished for being lazy, decadent Americans, and their European (can't remember exactly where he was from, Sweden maybe?) companion was just as American in his personality.

Overall I didn't think it was terrible, but it's not anything I'd watch again. The part where the first kid got his Achilles tendons cut really freaked me out, because I'm insanely phobic of things cutting my feet.

Yeah, true, but then there's the view that every European was portrayed as having a chip on their shoulder the size of an American car (oooOOooo).

I think maybe we're reading too much into a dumb offbeat horror.

No waiz you can never read too much into a horror film.

I guess nobody came out of it too well. I think what offended the Slovenians (and they really were pretty offended about it) was the scene where (paraphrasing here) some guy says: "Everyone in Slovenia is so poor, that they'll do anything for one American Dollar, including sleep with you". Then the fact that when they got there the country was portrayed as a hellhole filled with either murderous criminals or scabby whores and homeless kids.

But yeah, I got the picture he was also poking fun at the stereotype of the naive American abroad that a lot of people have.

Really I dont think believability should be even considered here. I already said this, but a lot of the best horror films (I'm by no means suggesting that Hostel is one of the best, mind) are an opportunity for people to explore implausible what if scenarios. You shouldn't watch it and go "that couldn't happen". The director should give you an imaginitive vision of what it would be like if you were transported into a parrallel universe where the events on screen were possible.

Even then, still pretty rubbish. I hope Susperia turns out better when I finally get my mitts on it...

I will tell you right now I can't stand Suspira and love Hostel, but my tastes for horror run towards explotation, sleaze and gore. Not moods and lighting and shit like that. My fave horror movies of all time is probably Cannibal Holocaust, Audition, the Ju-on series and stuff like Guiena Pig and sick Hong Kong stuff. My tastes are diff then you alls for sure.

I like a lot of Korean and Japanese ghost stuff too.

I thought Hostel sucked. I was hoping for something along the lines of a Saw.

Saw was ok but horrid acting almost ruined it, Saw 2 was better but both Cabin Fever and Hostel kick its ass, so does House of 1K Corpses and Devils Rejects for that matter.

I am on a huge euro sleaze kick lately. I watched Satans Blood the other night and Don't deliver us from Evil and some Nunsplotation filmos on tap for this week. Satan, Blood, full frontal and lesbians every time.

Anyone one here seen Nekromantik 1 or 2? Crap films but def sick if you are into that.

If the first Saw had had good actors it would probably be one of my favourite movies of all time. In the second one you already knew the guy was tricky as fuck so it wasn't as cool.

Saw 3 comes out later this year. Woot.

Just saw Pulse. It was ok I guess. I thought the ending kind of sucked but the begining through the middle was pretty good.

Suspiria has plenty of gore and brutality compared to the Ju-On films, though. But no, there's not much sleaze to be found in Argento's films unless you count him throwing in gratuitous nude shots of his teenage daughter.

Anyhow, late 70s-early 80s Italian exploitation is usually a subject I'm very interested in, but I never got to see Cannibal Holocaust all the way through. I borrowed a friend's DVD, but the fucker broke halfway through the film and I never got round to getting a working copy. I've never enjoyed a cannibal film as much as I do most zombie ones though.

Talking of which, just ordered Fulci's The New York Ripper, apparently his "darkest" film although I've never seen it before myself. It'll be a cheap copied DVD but worth it seeing as how the film will never even get released here officially, let alone in uncut form.

Yeah I preferred the second Saw film as well. It had some really intense, quite uncompromising scenes in it, whereas the first tended to wuss out of a lot.

As for euro sleaze, most of the time I don't like it because I prefer to keep sex and horror seperate. A lot of those films seem to combine the worst of both worlds. I was pretty obssessed with euro zombie films for a while so I was trying to watch everything I could, good or bad. There's some gems there, though.

I've waded almost halfway through The New World. This movie is a fucking chore. I honestly had to put the subtitles on so I could understand what the narrators were mumbling about. Still, that girlie is pretty damn cute.

If you mean the Native American one (Pochahontas) you'll be pleased to know she's 15.

Saw 2 wasn't as good as the first. It was twisting so far round in circles trying to outdo the first one, and the new director enjoyed his MTV spazz-cam jerking around too much.

Did they seriosuly expect the audience to be shocked by the fact that the dude from 24 had been stringing Marky Mark's brother along and that he would win again?

I saw that...it sucked. That's pretty much my opinion of it...

I watched Kung Fu Hustle last night. Not really that funny, but pretty good Kung Fu stuff...I don't know why I've seen it twice, though.

Yeah but the Ju-on movies are well acted, well directed and in reality more brutal because of the pure hatred. Shit that one scene alone where the couple is having breakfest and out of the blue the wife just whacks him in the head with the frying pan blows Suspira away. I just feel Argento makes up for a weak script that has no point and horrid acting with good set design and Goblin. I have watched Susperia 3 times and own it and still don't know what the fuck it is about, the beginning is fucking aces though I will admit.

You better get the new grindhouse release of Cannibal Holocaust, it is not just a "cannibal" movie, it has a huge message and is a landmark and important film. If you can't take animal cruelty and shit just watch the version with it taken out.

Oh yeah, CH is definitely on my "to buy" list. I don't think any of the animal cruelty is available in the UK in any form though. I can definitely manage without seeing that  Deodato has always said that the tribes they were filming killed and ate the animals that die on screen anyway, so him filming it wasn't any different to making a wildlife documentary. But whether that's true or not I'd feel too sorry for the little critters to enjoy the film after that.

True, Argento has never had a really good script once in his career, and he doesn't give a shit about whether he has good actors or not. Some of his films do suck as a result, but Suspiria just has an atmosphere that I've never, ever seen recreated. The storyline is so simplistic, but everything about it is so dark and surreal. The wierd set design, the lighting effects. And holy fuck is the music awesome! My favourite shot in the history of cinema is the one near the start when Jessica Harper is looking out of the taxi window into a thunderstorm in the middle of the night in a forest. And the light from the taxi flashes along the screen across the trees, and you can just see this girl terrified and running through the forest looking behind her. And over the top is this loud percussive clanging noise by Goblin.

Haha, well I could talk about that film all night so it's better I stop now

Agreed, and personally, I think the directing sucked in both movies, it was so amateurish except for 1 or 2 really well made scenes.

Capote - Good film, if you find watching people do squeaky voices entertaining. He did deserve the oscar though, I'll give him that.
