Especially thanks to the vocals, it sounds like In Flames. Japanese really have the tendency to immitate something Western and then make it better, you see that a lot (Mono).

Ditto. I'm just getting into the melo-death genre actually; In Flames, Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity never did much for me, but a few months ago I purchased the album Fragments of D-Generation by Disarmonia Mundi and it just really clicked with me, especially after repeated listens. I really like the added touch of electronica on that album and this album seems to have even more of that, intermixed just as tastefully. Definitely checking this one out.

Kinda remarkable though how much I like that song "Hyper Sonic", considering it sounds pretty much EXACTLY like Colony/Clayman-era In Flames.

I don't know....I still just don't seem to like it as much as you guys. I'm ot saying that it is not melodic, cause it is...but most of that meldoy is coming from keyboards/synths. Conoly-era In Flames had a lot of melody as well, but it came from the guitars, which is what I liked so much about it. Not saying that there aren't any good riffs or solos, its just that the guitars seem like a supporting instrument to the keyboards, instead of it being the other way around.

As for the singer, that clean singing voice just gets more annoying as that screaming voice gets more enjoyable.

I agree with you the samples that I listened to didnt really do it for me. It is definatly good muisically just not my style. I couldnt see me listening to this repeated times.

This is totally unremarkable, and embarassingly similar to Colony/Clayman era In Flames. They are certainly competent musically and would be better off with less of those atrocious clean vocals and techno effects. But since they are a Japanese band I'm sure J-Rock fans and Anime devotees will hype them to no end.

The Korean band, Holy Marsh, released a far superior melodic (and far more original) death album in 2001 called "In the Holy Marsh".

I wasn't aware that melodic death metal was so diverse. Most melodeath bands are very similar in style. Making these comparisons is kind of pointless.

Is this band good or not? That's all that matters. :dio:

Arguably so, yes, but I don't necessarily find this detracting. It's like with Sonata Arctica (one of my favorites), who are also more keyboard and vocal-driven than anything else, except the guitar work of this band is far more remarkable. The songs are likely not written around riffs, but the rhythm guitars still have an extremely strong heavy flow to them and do add greatly to the music.

Still, however, I must strongly disagree with this:

Wouldn't be much left without them...

I used to be really into J-Rock,but I still enjoy it sometimes. This band is a very nice suprise for me,thanks Chris!I love keyboards and synths,so this really appeals to me,and they have nice solos which is one of my favorite things in music too.I am used to plenty of anime songs and have a few Japanese friends who use english phrases occasionally, and I find it charming when people try to speak in other languages.

Mystic Your Heart seems quite good too,I can't wait to get these albums! :dio:

You're welcome. It was a huge surprise for me too :). I'm also looking forward to listen to their previous albums in depth, but from what I've heard on other reviews, their previous albums are more in the vein of Children Of Bodom... so even if they're good they will probably not sound like Idolator at all.

Chris

They have a song from their previous album up on myspace, sounded pretty much like Idolator minus the stellar production to me. Certainly seems worth checking out too, but aquiring those will of course be way trickier. Anyways, forgot to say thanks for the recommendation (through an excellent review), this is definitely top ten for 2006 stuff in my book, and it may actually become my very favorite once I get around to hearing the whole thing. I actually had trouble sleeping last night so psyched I was. :dio:

Haha me too,I listened to they're available songs so many times and watched their music videos a couple each.As for the comparison of their early works to CoB,I'd say you are right about that, watch this video from their first album http://youtube.com/watch?v=cUl-RPcOvsc.

I love how they trade solos and finish together, the guitarist and keyboardist.Very CoB,and I love CoB so its a win win situation for me.I do miss the production of the newer stuff, but its still great. As soon as I can,I am getting their cd's!I'm so stoked! :dio:

This is pretty damn awesome if you ask me. Holy shit I am loving this.

WARNING:
This is not your typical melodic death. If you don't like J-Pop than this is not for you. Fruity Melodic Death Metal w/ J-Pop.

The full album is at the same level, there is no filler or weak track !
