Haven't they just made a film of that?

NR: The Dark Tower, last book. Bastards went and made the font smaller. Still, it's all epic and stuff.

I just finished A Wizard of Earthsea, book one of the Earthsea trilogy. Anyone read these "classic" books? I just finished R.A. Salvatore's Highwayman two weeks ago—which was basically a fantasy take on Robin Hood, and quite good—and decided to try this Earthsea trilogy since I owned it. I bought it after they did that horrible Sci-Fi channel movie. I'd read on some forums that the movie was nothing like the books (i.e. not horrible). After finishing A Wizard of Earthsea I think I have to disagree.

I love the ideas in the world of Earthsea, but this story is just ridiculous. I think the grammar is pretty bad, too. (How about some commas, Ursala? Thanks.) There is very little character development that is natural; characters develop in A to Z fashion: skipping B through Y. One day a goatherder; next day a wizard conjuring demons from the abyss (a prideful mistake, of course).

The battle scenes, or the dramatic scenes, last about two paragraphs each. Ged, the main character, killed 5 young dragons in the span of about two sentences; he then beat an old, wizened adult dragon by simply saying his name. Again, the whole "name" thing is a great concept, but it eliminates any sort of true drama! In other fantasy novels, fighting a dragon is no joke, it spans chapters; good ol' Ged destroys 5 young dragons and defeats an adult within a paragraph! Hahaha. What a joke.

Anyway, I found the book to be terribly written and paced. Does anyone truly like these books? Am I just not getting it? For now, I just started this:

I tried this one when I first began reading Terry Brooks and didn't dig on it, never finished. Now the asshole went and connected the Word & Void trilogy—which this book is part one of—with his Shannara books; so now I have to read it. Fucker.

Reading Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan right now--one of the best books in the Wheel of Time series. I picked up A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin the other day, and I plan to read that after I finish this.

My mum bought me The Shinning for Jewmas, so I'll need to get my arse in gear and actually read Dune.

I think you might be dissapointed in Cell. I read it in about 4 hours a couple of weeks and def King has lost it, another book of his that starts off awesome but midway through he just loses it, and plus he is recycling big time......Sad. Anyone read "Lisey's Story" yet or know what it is even about?

I read a whole shit load of stuff the last few weeks. The newest Ann Rule, the above mentioned Cell, The Devil Wears Prada (laugh if you want but a good book), Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (ditto) Ecstasy - Welsh, In the Dark - Laymon, Dark Water (short stories) Kenji Suzuki (Ring author) and I am reading City of the Dead by Brian Keene now.

Fucking right.

ZOMG SPOILERS

I had no problem with it just ending with roland entering the Tower and us never finding out what happened. Just about anything else would have been an anticlimax, especially since Steve had basically forgot about the Tower for the previous few books (and replaced it with all that shite about the Tet Corporation  ). The epilogue with Roland getting sent back to the start was annoying, but the "Suzannah in New York" section was just horrific.

I can't stand Stephen King's books. Why does he describe the life of a character for like 2 pages and then have the character die half a page later!?!?!?!?

+ suck at writing?

I'd hope I can but I always get frustrated and stop halfway through writing something. And just because an 18 year old isn't as good as him isn't say much :lame:

i wasn't really comparing, i was just merely stating that you shouldn't nag about a writer, who has often been recognized as a brilliant writer. Even more because you could probably not write half as good as him. And age doesn't matter shit, go find an other excuse.
