To be teh shredd0rz you have to be like me and lack any actual musical talent whatsoever, writing thrash and death metal songs in your bedroom. Nuthin' better than playing a simple song with a Slayer solo.

You gotta press your thumb against the back of the neck rather than curl it around. That way you will find your fingers gots more freedom. :wink:

Then again, Hendrix held his guitar the way you do.

Generally true, but there are exceptions.

Wrapping your thumb around the neck is a must for string bending. Some chord voicings can be easier if you finger the bottom string with your thumb. The thumb can also be useful for muting idle low strings when strumming chords.

And you should not press your thumb against the back of the neck. It's there only as an anchor point.

actually I think that when hey snapped the foto I was playing something acoustic that required me to use my thumb to play a D/F# chord. So I play the D but hit the F# on the E string with my thumb.

(from left) Older brother, older sister, older mother, younger sister, me.

It was a fancy dress party, which explains some of the getup. I was a millipede but my sleeping-bag costume was too hot.
