As a loooong time Grave Digger fan I was anticipating this one very much. It turned out better than the last one, but this is not it (jet). Solid album, but compared to their best works (Tunes of War, Knights of the Cross, The Reaper, Heart of Darkness) it really doesn't stand the test. It has some excellent moments but at times I found myself totaly uninterested - even bored. But at the end it's a step higher - maybe step towards the old glory (I hope).
75/100 for me (and even now I beleive it's too generous).

I totally agree with this review. Again a solid release! I always wondered why I liked this band, I mean you can give so many reasons for not liking this band, the clichés, his voice, the same songstructure over and over again,...but still I keep on listening to this band over and over again...and this album will be no exception!

Definately Tunes of War and heavy metal breakdown...and if you want it more epic, try Rheingold.

Excalibur is, as far as I'm concerned, their best album. I also love The Grave Digger, Rheingold, Knights Of The Cross. The old classics Tunes of War and Heavy Metal Breakdown (that song is one of GD's best song ever).

Hope this helps,
Chris

So what's the historical theme on this one?

Each song tells a different story, but the main theme is the fight for freedom...one example, "massada" was a fortress in palestine, defended by the last rebellious jews in the first centyry BC and was sieged by the romans...they all killed themselves when the romans were about to break through...anyway, each song it's own story :)

Well, except for two, who were supposed to be the last to kill themselves and then surrendered. Good old Josephus then sucked up to Vespasian and Titus and wrote a history of the Jewish war.

Rheingold is a sort of album, that made me think not all power metal is gay. I might be wrong though

Never really bothered to explore this band, but Tunes Of War is a kickass song as far as I remember. Haven't heard it in years though, so my mind might be playing tricks on me.

The vocalist is fun as hell, and he does some hilarious vocals on White Skull's Tales From The North as well. Now that is a quite good album :D
