I read very little fantasy. I'm quite the newb. I first read a few Clive Barker fantasy books, then everything by Terry Brooks except his Word & Void series—which I just read. Then I read the Belgariad by David Eddings, and then moved on to Salvatore. I read a few others here and there, too. I've only been seriously reading fantasy for a few years now.

I also started in a similar way with fantasy. Eventually and after some years I became bored with those commercial and predictable fantasy authors and started discovering true gems that are not so promoted in bookstores. But those above are all good to get you into fantasy and keep you hooked. And as I've always been saying, the most important thing is that you enjoy what you're doing regardless of what I or anybody else says about it.

Oh and at the moment I'm taking a small break from classical fantasy or Sci-Fi. I'm reading Terry Pratchett's Small Gods.  :D

My advice: Check out George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. I promise, if you do, I'll check out Pillars of the Earth, which I found in the basement the other day.

Oh, and Small Gods is my favourite Pratchett book. I love it.

In due time. I read rather slowly. Hehe. You should read Pillars of the Earth either way; it's awesome.

And Terry Pratchett is an author I once tried to read and could not get into it at all. I didn't like his style and I surely didn't find any of it funny.

I liked that book.

I didn't find Terry Pratchett that funny after reading one or two books of his, but his books were just so easy to read that I kept reading them.

I'm on a Kurt Vonnegut Jr book that I forget the name of, the word "Sirens" is in it though.

You gotta watch out which Pratchett you read. Some of it is really horrible; he has, what, 40 books out? But I think the majority of them range from pretty funny to very funny.

Small Gods is probably the best Discworld I've read. I find him amusing rather than actually funny....

I'm almost done with A Game of Thrones (book 1 of A Song of Ice and Fire, that series that Brahm keeps recommending). It's really, really good, though...very highly recommended. There's not a whole lot of battle scenes or anything, but it's still extremely good.

Ya, Martin puts a lot of the battles off scene (there is one in A Game of Thrones, but its short... But keep in mind that the war's just started). The next two books, A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords, each have a very well written battle near their end. Glad you enjoyed it.

i've been looking all over for A Song of Ice and Fire, but i can't find it anywhere.

i'm reading Alexander - 3: The Ends of the Earth, and it's really good. i should be done in a day or two.
the writing is a bit is a bit samey, especially the description of the women is a bit samey throughout (i.e. they're all really hot).

Goddamn Portugal. Head north to England; you should find it there no problem at any first hand bookstore.

Aeschylus- The Oresteia

Finished reading the Shike books a while ago, amazing.

Now reading The Redemption of Althalus, not that impressed so far.

Read part I. Liked, even if it was a bit overlong. Started Part 2. Put it down. Was horrible.

I finished Kurt Vonnegut Jr's The Sirens of Titan, definitely worth checking out - it had some interesting insights that were worked very well into the story, and unlike a lot of other 'smart person books' it was very easy to read.

Now onto All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
