Excellent album with a raw attitude many modern bands lack today, including Arch Enemy themselves.

Liva was the shit and this is what melodic death metal is all (and should be) about.

Yep, this album was made by an Arch Enemy that mattered. Liiva was great and Mike Amott sold his soul.

Though I enjoy modern Arch Enemy this statement couldn't be more true. The raw attitude and energy eminating from this CD is missing from all their other releases and many newer bands as well, as you said. Very well put.

This album is a megaton bomb of early melodic death metal and Michael Amott is its Enola Gay. It reeks of carcass and at the same time feels heavier and doomier.

This album sounds like Heartwork but with a bit more oomph. I also like that its short because I can hardly ever stand more than 40 minutes of death metal at a time. Johan's vocals are kind of annoying though.

C'mon Noodles, can't you just like something to like it for a change?

I'm over the melodeath genre like most of us here but this album here is just a damn good piece of stupid metal.

Nevar!!!

on a related note I listened to Soilwork's first album for the first time in a while today, and it's damn fine. It's hard to think of it as the same band that made Figure Number Five and Stabbing The Drama because they sound nothing alike :|

Yeah, they really fell down a downward slope to shit over the years.

This album is fantastic, I'd say their best, followed by Burning Bridges. Stigmata is a bit too disjointed for me, but its also very solid.

Quote:
In fact, Cosmic Retribution has one of my favorite sequences of leads. First is a blistering solo from Michael Amott, which eventually goes into an acoustic solo from Christopher Amott that fits surprisingly well. About ¾ of the way through this solo, some double bass comes in which eventually paves the way for the distorted guitars to come roaring back with Christopher Amott delivering a melodic solo of his own. Sure, there are better played solos out there, but just something about this sequence really makes it cool (for lack of a better word).

Fuck yeah. :dio:

Sidenote: Apparently Fredrik Nordstrom will be producing the next AE album and it will be more in the vein of Burning Bridges and Wages of Sin than the last two with Andy Sneap.

I also picked up Steel Bath Suicide again, and it is way better than I remember. Top notch stuff.

This is a great album! Not quite as good as Stigmata, but it is damn good melo death.
