I thought Sin City was cool, but 300 just looked like one bit LotR battle scene so I don't really want to see it.

If your just in for a few good cheap thrills and visual splendor, it hits the spot. Great special effects, great battle scenes with lots of slow motion. But as far as dialouge and story goes...it's something like this:

1.Leonidous: blah blah blah FUCKIN SPARTA!!!!! ::MEN BEAT THEIR CHEST AND SCREAM::

2.Spartan: blah blah blah, I love fighting for FUCKING SPARTA!!! ::MEN BEAT THEIR CHEST AND SCREAM:: and my king.

Repeat.

Sounds good to me :P
I mean, what can you expect from soldiers during that time.
"Oh bugger, my sandals don't match this costume at all. I'll be sure to pick up another pair next time we hit the gucci store."

Yeah but the dialogue was just retarded most the time

persia : "lay down your weapos"
spartan" come and get it " *make uber manly face*

Ha, sorry to burst your buble, but thats actually what they're reported as saying in Plutarch (it'd be "come and get them", by the way). The "then we will fight in the shade line" is from Herodotus. The 300 (and the 700 the movie ignores) were the original Clint Eastwoods.

yeah, but you don't read greek or latin mythes for their realism, do you? :P

Heeeeey.. don't insult my Plutarch that way. He may have made some stuff up to fit moral points/parralel his lives, but he's still a lovely, sexy historian.

I'll grant you Herodotus.

hehe, i didn't say i didn't enjoy both Plutarch or Herodotus. But meh, i'm more into Vergilius' Aeneïs. Yes yes, most roman writers copied greek ones, but honestly, i don't give a fuck.btw Greek empire vs Troy(although the movie kinda sucked donkey balls)>silly little encounter between Persia and 300 spartans :P

I won't argue with that. I admit that I always tear up in the Iliad when Hector dies, and in the Aeneid when Priam dies. Nothing brings out Greek tradedy like the Trojan war; all my favourite Greek plays too (The Trojan Women, the Oresteia) are all related to it in some way. And the Aeneid beats the Odyssey, even if it is half propoganda and half a ripoff of Greek myths. Nothing beats the Iliad, though.

And the period from the Gracchi to Actium>Trojan War>300.

Quote:
From the ridiculous Persian monsters to the Spartan hunchback "gollum" character to every woman looking like an emicated crackwhore to the final scenes basically ripping off Gladiator to the stupid Matrix style fighting to the absolutely repulsive "gollum" betrayal scene with Xerxes in the orgy...I guess I can die a happy man now that I saw some softcore hunchback action!! Who knew the Persian's immortals were the Orcs from LOTR!

Did you see a fucking preview, man? It was pretty clear from the trailers (and the comic it was based on,) that these elements were going to be included. I do agree with you that the entire council thing was boring; but seriously, this is the equivalent of seeing Superman returns and complaining that a movie set in the modern day world included an alien who can fly.

Yeah I saw the fucking preview, man. Ok, I'll buy the Persian monsters stuff but this still ripped off a bunch of movies and that hunchback betrayal scene was one of the most repulsive things ever captured on film. It's just a damn movie anyway, we'd all be better off reading your man, Plutarch. :P (Reading Fall of the Roman Republic now)

Hey, if you can't appreciate good hunchback sex, then there's no hope for you.

Fall of the Roman Republic is the penguin edition that has Marius, Sulla, Crassus, Caesar, Pompey and Cicero, right? If so, you're in for an entertaining read; his lives of Marius and Caesar are my two favourites of his.

First off, I wrote those scathing remarks about the movie right after I saw it, so looking back on it today I might have been a little harsh. I just had inflated high expectations and when it didn't meet those I overreacted. If you liked the movie, more power to you.

KBrahm-Yes it is the Penguin version. I'm a Byzantine guy but lately I've wanted to know more about what started it all. I already started peeking into the Caesar section---good stuff indeed! I admit I am most looking forward to the Marius section: he seemed the most fascinating based on those superficial wikipedia blurbs.

The devil wears Prada.

It made me sick. Fo real. Awful mess. Don't see it.
Although Meryl Streep is great, kicks ass.

Well, then you can help me. I'm a Roman guy (and to a lesser extent, an ancient greek guy) and I've been wanting to check out the Byzantines. I've read Procopius and some other stuff on Justinian, and a book or two which talked about the fourth crusade, but nothing else. Any reccomendations?

Sure. Btw, out of curiosity what book on the 4th crusade was it?

For particularly Byzantine books, I first read Micheal Psellus/Micheal Psellos' 14 Byzantine Emperors. This collection basically covers the stories of mostly incompetant and depraved rulers that usually reigned for a couple years and managed to bankrupt and half the empire. It spans from the death of one of the greatest Byzantine Emperors, Basil II in 1025, to 1078, shortly before the accession of Alexius Comnenus/Alexios Komnenos, another magnificent ruler. Psellus is extremely biased at points, and because of politics blames the defeat at Manzikert wrongly. He can also be incredibly smug and arrogant. But he also is a talented writer at points, and gives some real insight into the rampant treachery and carelessness which he seems to realize was a real sign of the empire's decline. Overall a good read.

I also have Anna Comnena's Alexiad, based on her father Alexius but I haven't read that yet.

Sadly eyewitness Greek sources translated into English aren't all that available for the Byzantine period, perhaps because no one thought the empire was worth studying until recent decades.

For a more general history, I'd recommend John Julius Norwich's Short History of Byzantium (400 pages) or if you are willing to pay the 3 volume, nearly 1200 page set that the Short History is based
on. I have both, I bought the short history first and then liked it enough to get the full version. Norwich is a pretty gifted writer---his description of General John Tzimisces winter night conspiracy in the palace against Emperor Nicephorus II Phocas is very gripping, and he gives an extremely powerful description of the siege that late spring in 1543, when Constantinople finally fell. His sentences are overly complex sometimes but I'd definitely recommend him. I'd probably get the short version before I decide to get the long.

I've also read some more Europe themed books that prominently feature the interactions of the Empire with it, but I'll only mention those if you are interested.

If I bored someone, sorry.

Borat - this movie can do no wrong. Then I watched the deleted scenes and had another good laugh.

Man of the Year - wasn't bad, started off as a comedy but then turned into a thriller. I wanted a full out comedy, but Robin Williams is usually pretty funny and some of it was pretty much his stand up just toned down.

The Protector - horrible acting, my friend didn't like the story but that's because he didn't understand it. Awesome fighting, but Ong Bak I enjoy way more. Tony Jaa in a serious mode kicks way more ass than him being all happy.

Borat. WIth my mother. I was nervous, cuz my mother is a very "american" person, and I wondered how she'd react to the vulgarity. Surprisingly, she laughed the most during the naked wrestling.

"Oh my god, no vulgarity, nudity, poo jokes, swear words, sex jokes or anything like that". That sort of person.

Awesome, thanks for the reccs, man. In answer to your question, I've read Karen Armstrong's History of the Crusades, and Phillips book on the Fourth Crusade. I'm going to go try to find Norwich's three volume set (I like details in my history; I've seen the shorter one around, but 400 pages for a thousand years of history is not my cup of tea). Thanks once again, man.

Just saw the Prestige. Guessed Borden's, was unsure about the details of Angier's till the end. Excellent movie.

Oh ya, and saw Snakes on a Plane the other night. What a dissapointment; it wasn't funny as it was supposed to be. Where's the over the topness? Where's Jackson saying motherfucker every five lines and being a badass instead of just in the last five minutes? It was all very boring. I watched the gag reel; some of the stuff there, like a character yelling "DAMN YOU, SNAKES! DAMN YOU TO HELL!" is exactly what the movie needed.

He is American right? Just pretends to be euro because he lives there? Not everyone in the US is a get on your knees and pray to jehovah in the middle of a cornfield in Nebraska type. No offence to people actually living in Nebraska.....

Well...judging from the context he used the word in, it seems he meant "prude" when he said "American". Having said that, the next person that refers to anything sexual or vulgar in nature will get a warning, and then banned upon second violation.

By Thor's fucking hand, if anyone gets seriously pissed at me for that overtly sarcastic comment, I will get you banned for the utter opaqueness you bring to this forum.
