My irony detector went dead, but no, they didn't.

Ceterum censeo that this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for America's gun law.

The guy was obviously a raging psycho, but sure, let's find scapegoats for someone who is mentally ill. You sound more like an American than you think.

Amen to that.

Psychos find ways to kill. Besides I used to live in Virginia and maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they have some very tough gun laws on par with CT. Mass and other places back east.

To contradict that where I live in Az we have pretty lax ones and you can even walk around carrying one in a holster. You don't believe me? Go check out Cave Creek or some other places North of here.

Anyways, It isn't Gun Laws, it is Psychos, mind set and our large population that causes these types of incidents and making it look like we have more then any other place. constantly. Not to mention or wining, blame it on somebody else, everyone owes us something culture in the US lately.

Agreed. Though tougher gun laws are needed in the States (I believe... I don't see a reason why anyone should legally be able to own a semi-automatic or automatic weapon), people like this are going to find ways to kill no matter what. Better to investigate whats motivating these sick fucks and try to stop it.

I agree with Carnie that I'm not as shocked as I should be.

Maybe it's because of the ridiculous amounts of school shootings that have happened in recent times, but the fact that this is the worst school shooting ever in America doesn't surprise me.

Virginia's gun laws are pretty strict, although not as strict as Mass. The only one I remember off the top of my head is that you can't have access to a gun while driving. Technically, drive-bys are illegal (besides the whole "killing people" angle). To answer the first question posed in the thread, yes, the shooter killed himself. That's why his identity hasn't been released yet; they can't identify the blob of goo that is his head, and he wasn't carrying any identification on him.

After watching the press conference, they've settled on 33 as the total death toll; 32 students and the shooter. More are currently in the hospital, though, so it might rise.

Noodles, I sincerely hope you never have to be in a situation where you lose the luxury of that attitude.

Another one? The world is truly fucked up, and you can't blame America for it, look at the number of stabbings over here. Kids are being tought that somehow violence is noble, and wherever they're getting this from, pop. culture, games, films or metal, it's sick. Whatever happened to alcohol as a means of dealing with depression?

Not that anything I say makes a difference, but please accept my comiserations, Americans from the board. Life is too precious to be ended in such a way.

Nobody is allowed to own in automatic weapoin in the US. For every AK-47 or Uzi Semi-Auto there is 30-06 or 12 gauge Semi Auto for hunting.......

He is a kid and that kind that gets backed in front of the TV and thinks it is cool to laugh at things like this with his friends, it will pass. Again, people like Noodles and their attitude for certain things is why they should have a draft.

Oh, sure. Like the way to keep bored teenagers amused is to teach them to shoot things.

Worst shooting in the history of the U.S.? I didn't know that...

I guess he chained the exits in the hallways and just mowed 'em down when people tried to get out...just terrible. I was wondering how he could have possibly managed to kill so many people without getting tackled or something.

Forget all that.

There are just two words that describe the reasons : BAD PARENTING.

I don't know, correct me if I'm wrong, americans. But I feel american culture and values praise too much the WINNER and LOSER thingy. Winners do that, winners don't do that, losers give up ... so kids think "well if I'm a loser now, I'm gonna be a loser forever". Maybe I'm quoting Matt Stone (from Bowling for Columbine) a little bit, but that's because I agree with everything he said.

My condolences to everyone that had close friends or family there.

I agree with that, although the issue is exponentialy more complex.

You have the weapons you can purchase legaly, that fire three round busts (modified M-16's for example). You can purchase thompson machien guns now mail order. They make magazines you can buy here for your pistols that will hold 30 rounds. The gun laws may be harsh for when you commit a crime with them, but it get them its well and easy. My uncle bought all of these legaly.

people like to argue that guns are protected by the constitution, but to my knowledge, this has never been tested in court. How a bunch of rednecks in the NRA take "the right to regulate and maintain a militia" into "i can own assault rifles" is complete bullshit

Its true that there is more violence in other places in the world, that are terribly worse, it just strikes a chord because the people involved didn't even know shit was going on. there is no war there, there are no drug lords terrorizing people and there are no dictators making people disappear off the street. They woke up that mornign and had no reason to think that in their most fantastic nightmares somthing like this could happen. In that case, what makes any of us different than those people at VA tech.

On a funny note, Bush said his administration would assist in the investigation. Does that mean Rove and Cheney are going to go sleuthing for clues in Virginia ?
Some times I think our president doesn't understand civics.

I really agree with teh bad parenting point, that makes such a big difference in everyone's life, for better or worse. And yeah, you had somewhat of a point there with the loser/winner thing, but I can't really comment since I have never lived in another country and have no firsthand comparisons to make. But I think much more complicated than that. Some people who are "losers" in various aspects of their lives could have a resiliant quality to their personality that could lead them to make a mental change which leads them to "winning" in said aspects. Some may feel like an eternal loser but focus it all eternally, either just getting through life and harming themselves in various ways. If this guy did indeed feel like a hopeless "loser", he could have focused his blame externally, in an obviously hamrful way.

Then, of course, there are people who are just beyond motherfucked in the head, which could explain such a senseless act of violence like this.

ok that kind of creeped me out.

Anyways I don't think theres any one cause that can apply to any screwed up person - hell maybe the thing that made this guy different from the guy who only killed himself is hearing lyrics about the fun of blowing another person... you never really know. Sure bad parents won't help, but I hardly think that whenever someone goes wrong you can point at the parents, or at the culture, or them just starting out with a flawed brain, or at any one and say that it was the cause
