hey, i'm also reading A Game of Thrones! :P
i had to ask a question, though, should i read the appendices or look up stuff on the internet before i go on any further (i'm on the bit with Bran and the pups)? because i get the feeling i'm expected to know wtf they're talking about when they mention walls, wildlings, others, etc etc

Of course you're not expected to know that stuff yet (you're on the first real chapter). Let it come, and you'll figure everything out. Also, do make use of the appendices if you're confused; they're based on everyone's position at the beginning of the book, so there's no spoilers.

I finished Hey Nostradamus. It got a lot better when a plot beyond the school shooting developped. Gonna try to read Brave New World again now.

there was the eyeroll, making it a sarcastic statement.

The Sorrows of Young Werther - Goethe

what's all the fuss? It bored me to death.

I gotta get my hands on some Palahniuk books.

Palahniuk is good for Fight Club, and Fight Club only.

The rest of his books are essentially Fight Club Remix, Fight Club Remix V2, Fight Club Now With More Marshmallows, Fight Club XTREME, and Fight Club's Fight Clubbin' For Mini Fight-Clubbers.

rereading Battle Royale. Ah, sweet carnage.

I thought his style of social commentary got annoying before even the end of Fight Club :\

Eh, I can tolerate it long enough for a readthrough of Fight Club. It practically stops at a certain point anyway.

Invisible Monsters was a'ite.

I think Palahniuk is like a rather annoying Vonnegut for extreme literature newbies.

QFT. Choke was fun half the time though. Basically all the parts where he doesn't talk about his mom. Those parts reminded me of that movie with Marilyn Manson, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things.

If you're looking for just really extreme writing check out Irvine Welsh's Filth. Lots of sex and a lot of drug use with a great twist at the end. The main character has a Scottish accent which may annoy some people reading it.

Fight Club ruled big time but I didn't know the other books in the same vein. Now that I looked it up seems to be the consensus. Hmm. I liked that pool story from Haunted too.

I guess I'll just go back to boring myself to death with the world classics.

But can't it be like he found the perfect style for him and didn't wanna change that afterwards? Like don't fix if it ain't broken? Anyone? I really loved Fight Club.

Manitou Stork Nightmares is fucked up as well. I've read all of his books and my faves of his are Glue, Trainspotting, Porno and Exstacy. Filth I dug ok but it was bizzare and fucked up.

It's NOT like that. It gets boring as shit after you've read one of his books, all his books are written in the exact same narration style and voice except for like, two, both of which suck (Diary and Haunted).

Chuck just isn't very talented or very imaginative, aside from coming up with really gruesome-ass storylines.

I actually really like all of Palahuniak's stuff, with the exception of Choke.

Maybe that makes me some sort of sychophantic noob.

Trouble is, I really don't care.

Reading The Fellowship of the Ring...I've never read it, weird as that is. I tried reading it a few times when I was younger (I'm 16, so probably 11 or 12) and couldn't get into it. I think I'll be able to get past the relative slowness of it this time.

Ya, 11 isn't necessarily a good time for Lord of the Rings. Enjoy! Its quite an experience the first time through, though the fact that you've read other fantasy might make it less special.

Reading Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion. He is basically tearing religion a new one. Hopefully the rest is as good as the first three chapters.

If by tearing religion a new one you mean being an asshole and ranting, yes. I'm an atheist, but that book annoyed me just as much as some fundamentalist telling me that I'm going to hell. Its too bad too, because he's written good books in the past (The Selfish Gene in particular).

I'm an atheist myself, but books like this don't do anything for the steryotype that all atheists are arrogant assholes.
