also, i was thinking - are jews members of a race, a religion or both?
It's both as my religion teacher says, as you can't separate the culture with the religion and such.
well.. you can.. the aryan race (or scandinavian race if you like) was separated from it's original culture.

.. anyway, less than half of the danish population refers to themselves as being christians despite living in a culture is based on christianity.
one thing i don't understand, though, is that secular jews living outside Israel refer to themselves as jews all the time.. why is that? I don't refer to myself as being aryan, since it's of less importance - and if i did ppl would hang me. I would refer to my nationality.
Thats the thing, though. Whereas Christianity is specifically a religion, Judaism is apparently both a religion and a culture/heritage. Something to do with people trying to kill us every half century. Its all nonsense, but there we are.
well, i can understand that secular jews outside Israel refer to themselves as jews if it's a matter of the killings - cultural heritage. But secular jews who lives in another country/culture, has no use for refering to themselves as being jews if it's a matter of their jewish culture since it's non-existing, plus race is of no importance in the daily life in the western world nowadays.
Even with non-religious J00s, there's still a kind of nationalistic pride in being j00ish, even if they have no connection to the religion whatever. Plus, it's usually a good acid test on new people, drop it into a conversation casually and see the reaction.

"Hello"
"Hello, I'm j00s"
"Ohs, what is it?"
"I feel connected with the other j00s!"
"What kind of a connection?"
"That we are all connected!"
"And why are you connected?"
"Because we all have the same traditions"
"Like what?"
"Well, we sit around a table and eat all kinds of things not. And we cut off a part of a baby's fallus."
"Oh, oks"
