First, there's a difference between trends and fashion. It's trendy to wear a gas station work shirt now, but in five years, you'll look like a tool (well, personally I think you look like a tool now, but that's just me). Couture fashion tends to fall more toward the art side of things, simply because no one besides Bjork wears stuff like that in real life; it's a piece of art being moved on a person's body, then put away to be appreciated by those who do. The reason fashion design is taught in art schools is the same reason graphic design is taught there; it's a practical application of artistic principles. It takes a lot of creativity and workmanship to design clothing well, same thing as, say, good advertising design. It's not generally considered high art, but I think Andy Warhol had something to say about it.

Music is a completely different kettle of fish, because it's not visual art. The craftmanship and artistry behind it is completely different; you can't compare them. It's like comparing Blind Guardian to Leviathan; they're completely different, and measured by different standards, but to the people who appreciate them, each is as good as the other.

Apples and oranges; you can't say a single representative from one group is objectively better than a single representative from the other group, only that you're a bigger fan of one group or the other.
