Is this new album as bad as a 55/100? I mean really? Their last two were fairly solid, but nothing spectacular. What's this album really like?

Cacophonic Or Cacophony is the use of harsh or discordant sounds so it's basically singing in a harsh tone.

Without disagreeing with the definition above, I'd like to give my greek expertise on this matter and add:

Caco = bad
phony = voice (or sound in some cases)

Ha, I didn't knew that, they were such a perfect example of power metal, ..and now they make ballads, well they were also a pop band before beeing Stratovarius fanboys, lol.

I bellieve cacophony its the constant repetition of certain sounds or words, i dont think it has anything to do with singing in a harsh tone .

Dictionary.com wrote:
Cacophony: 1. harsh discordance of sound; dissonance: a cacophony of hoots, cackles, and wails.
2. a discordant and meaningless mixture of sounds: the cacophony produced by city traffic at midday.
3. Music. frequent use of discords of a harshness and relationship difficult to understand.

sonata arctica along with opeth are the #1 bands in all of music. ive listened to the cd a couple more times now and i think basically the first maybe half is really close to reckoning night, and then towards the end it goes into slower music, but i think once u listen to it a few times and start to know it, if your a fan you'll begin to like it nearly as much as all their other cds. i think though that their normal faster music & more intricate guitarwork is easier to like and is better, but maybe this will just be their "different" cd. all their previous cds are 100/100, this one is probably just a little lower.

100/100... really? How many cds would you rate 100/100?

...I don't get what's weird about him liking SA and Opeth.

Anyways, the only CD I have by them is Ecliptica, which owns, but I can't really comment on this one...

I don't think "cacophonic" is the best word to describe this album...I would rather say it's weak, bland or dull. This is such a huge disappointment, I really don't know what they were thinking when they wrote this album. They tried to progress but they took a huge step backwards instead.

Putting them as #1 bands in all music is crazy I don't even do that with Kamelot and Kamelot is my fav band.

If those are his favorite bands then cool but to say they are the #1 bands in all music is crazy there are many more talented bands out there that hold more candle then SA and Opeth.

It seems to be a trend these days that heavy/power metal bands are going through bands like,Sonata Arctica,Evergrey,Stratovarius and Edguy have changed their style of music for the worst.

I believe in change but in a good way not that Metallica way(not saying they sold out though just changed badly).I also believe in that old saying "if it aint broke don't fix it" but still if a band wants to add a new sound so as long as they don't sacrifice their trademark sound and style then I'm all for it.

Skid Row is a prime example.Look what they did with Slave To The Grind they became more aggresive and more edgier but still had some of that Skid Row bite they had with their S/T debut.

The thing is, you can't ask someone who's dedicated his life and career to music not to change because what you'll end up getting is the same music that gets either repetitive or lacking in feeling because they'll basically get bored with it and just go through the motions. The best bands change over time, but there is definitely a difference between positive change and Metallica change. Metallica has lost all sense of identity. Edguy hasn't. Even if you don't like their new hard rock-oriented style, it still foundationally sounds like Edguy and is exactly what they want to play. SA is playing what I think they want to play, and it still sounds like SA, even if more progressive and not as fast. There are still recognizable elements of the SA sound.

The problem I find with the new music is the same problem I find with Angra's new album as well as some progressive bands. The music is well-composed, but it sounds like it was composed for the sake of being well-composed and confuses excess with being interesting. There's nothing wrong with it on a technical level, but as Dream Theater's early albums showed - you can be excessive and still be catchy.

I like this album, 55 is extremely low. I don't even have to argue my points, you can tell for yourself. The reviewer is probably a power metal purist.

Hah.
Chris is a power metal junkie...just check some of his older reviews. He gives almost all power metal albums a high score, which to be frank annoys me.

As for Unia i don't need to repeat myself how much I'm disappointed. I'll always respect their early albums even Reckoning Night, which was a mixed bag at first but it grew on me. Unia is just bad though. This is my first SA album that i've scored bellow 85, so i guess that makes me something of a fan boy. I own all of their albums but this new one and I'll keep following this band as one of my favorites in the pm genre. 'Nuff said.

This is quite sad, the first CD I bought that got me disappointed just has to be Sonata's. The moment I read some of the comments on the site I decided that I won't listen to the album as a album that Sonata made. That would just ruin it. Now that I've listened to the album, I must say that it is quite bad, not only bad for Sonata but regardless of who would've done it.

Seriously, the only things I can remember of the album are Caleb, Paid In Full and the beginning in In Black and White and It Won't Fade. The possibilities are that it will grow on me ( highly doubtable ) or that it just isn't good. Sadly I lean towards the second possibility...

I disagree with the review ALOT. How can you give this album any less then an 80? Its definitly a different sound but in noway is it bad, every song is its own little masterpiece...what did you listen to it once got pissed off cuz your a Ecliptica fanboy and wrote this review? i mean if your a fan of music not just fast cheesy power metal you can appreciate this...Its def my top album for 2007 so far....i'd score it an 85/100. Took about 2 listens to get into it and now i cant stop listening, i suggest looking back into the album and not looking for 8th commandent over and over again. :dio:
