Any good?

I finally finished Anna Comena's Alexiad and now I'm taking a temporary break from history with some lighter reading: Dosteovsky's Brothers Karamazov.

Oh, very amazing- his five volume history of Rome is considered to be the most important history of Rome written in the 19th century, and perhaps of all time. Unfortunately, its impossible to find- I just got lucky at fuck and saw the whole set on sale at a second hand book store for 50 bucks. Still, if you ever do see, don't hesitate to pick it up.

How was the Alexiad?

I'll look for it.

The Alexiad was great because it is a primary source. Anna Comnena struggles in places with dates and quotes but I find her a less pompous read the Michael Pselleus. Sure it is biased but it is also very informative.

Primary sources can be very fun- just for that fun factor, they can be much better reads than modern works (hell, Xenophon's Anabis is a Hollywood movie, essentially)- and of course, there are some that are extremely insightful (Thucydides, Sallust, Polybius being great examples).

Now reading:

The Gap into Vision: Forbidden Knowledge by Stephen R. Donaldson

Brahm dude you sure do read a whole lot of books.

American Psycho. Again. The perfect book for me. I just see myself in it. I'm studying business, am a psychopath, like ranting about music...

Are you a speed reader Brahm? My gf says she is and I'd believe it because she can read like half a book in an hour >.<

I'm continuing my Cormac McCarthy binge (finished The Crossing), now I'm onto Blood Meridian. His description of the Apache's that attack him = pwn.

I am a speed reader and I do read a lot- I'm helped right now by the fact that I don't have a job at the moment- but I do generally read a lot anyway.

My sister is also a speed reader. I remember when we went on family vacation when we were kids. Eveyrytime we bought a comic book or graphical novel she would always be the first to read it because she would finish it in less than an hour while I needed the whole afternoon and maybe evening! :P

Just purchased:

Joyce - Dubliners
Kafka - Metamorphosis (I've previously read this.)
Dostoevsky - Devils (The Possessed or whatever it gets translated into)
Hobbes - Leviathan
Rousseau - Social Contract
George W. Smith - Atheism: The Case Against God

I believe I will start with the Atheism and then tackle James Joyce.

Stephen R. Donaldson- The Gap Into Power: A Dark and Hungry God Arises

So far, this sci fi series has been superb- one of the few that matches Martin and Bakker in terms of grittiness and darkness, and I reccomend it to all Martin fans (the first book, called The Real Story, is very different from the rest- I reccomend continuing on with it even if you don't like that one).

got some DC graphic novels from the library, I don't think they're a fan of Marvel, as they don't have any.

in fact, I'm still at the library, because my internet is deaaad at home.

Just started reading Perfume. Murder and olfactory nerves together is interesting.

My local library must be a fan, cause they have a whole bunch. Like, a bunch of Spiderman, X-men, etc. as well as the DC ones. and the Phantom  Actually I find many of The Phantom comics pretty boring.
