I add to the massive EWWWWWWWWW. Oh my FUCK. Anything that has elves, farm boys discovering long hidden magical artifacts and dragons can suck my metaphorical cock! It can suck all 17 of my metaphorical cocks. Cinderella stories with nancy boys? No fanx. Same goes for the Harry Potter series too. Pretty much anything with a "chosen one" needs to be burnt immediately. I cannot fully express my disgust. Possibly the best fantasy at the teenager and up level is His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. The vast majority of fantasy out there is so painfully insipid.

Now reading Perdido Street Station by China Miéville. I ditched Conan for this and I'm very glad I did (I will pick it up when I'm finished with this book). It is so amazingly dark and gritty, an awesome piece of New Weird fantasy. I'm also simultaneously reading Odd John by Olaf Stapledon.

Agreed completely. Wheel Of Time's starting to drag a bit, and Harry Potter was always naff. Looking forwards to the HDM film, if only out of curiosity.

And pretty much everything of China Miéville's I've read has been excellent. Get The Scar and The Iron Council as well, all great reads.

The Pillars of the Earth was probably the best book I've ever read.

Now reading:

Ahh, a man after my own heart. China Mieville is awesome- Perdido Street Station has some great worldbuilding, but then its plot starts sucking the cock after about 200 pages or so. Thats why when you're done that, you pick up The Scar, which has the great worldbuilding, characterization and a fantastic plot.

Oh yes:

Stephen R. Donaldson- The Gap into Ruin: This Day All Gods Die

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I was gone for more than two weeks--on vacation in Italy. It was teh pwn if anyone's wondering, but anyways I did a lot of reading while I was there. I finished Dune Messiah, which was as awesome as Dune. I also read Crossroads of Twilight in which basically nothing happened, but I was still greatly entertained because it's the first new material in the Wheel of Time I've read in a REALLY long time after re-reading 1-6 (I skipped 7-9 because they weren't that great...). Right now, I'm reading A Storm of Swords and plan to start Knife of Dreams sometime soon (I guess it's supposed to be really good--a return to form for Wheel of Time).

:omfg: :omfg: :omfg:

Entertained by Crossroads of Twilight? This boggles the mind.

Nice job on Italy though.. Its a beautiful country, and Rome is my favourite city. Where'd you go?

Oh yes... and everyone says A Knife of Dreams is a return to form, but thats only because some things do happen- but not nearly enough, its padded by about 250-300 unnecessary pages in hardcover, and the plotlines that are resolved are done so poorly. Still, its too late to stop now... I'll be reading book 12 along with everyone else.

Oh, and A Storm of Swords is the best. book. ever.

Just so I know, is it actually worth reading the Wheel Of Time books? Got the next one I'm up to, and I'm not sure I could cope with yet another bloody Forsaken getting free and needing to be killed.

Yeah, I know ...Crossroads of Twilight never even really got past the end of Winter's Heart. It was still kind of fun to read some WoT again, though.

On the trip, we started in Rome, which was awesome (gelato every ten steps, anybody?). We also checked out Pompeii and Naples on a day trip type of thing--Naples is kind of poor but the ruins in Pompeii were awesome and extremely well preserved, not to mention that the pizza in Naples was hella good. then I think we went to Tuscany which was fun because we stayed at this nice villa thing but besides that there wasn't much. then we went to Florence, then the Dolomites (which was weird because it was like we were in Austria or something), and then we ended in Venice. Jolly good time.

A Storm of Swords is sweet so far...Catelyn Stark is fucking retarded, though. The Imp remains my favorite character.

yeah i also want to read the new HP. i've read the other 6 so i might as well finish the damn thing, and truth is i think JK Rowling is a good storyteller.

i ordered A Clash of Kings and it should arrive by august, if not sooner, and my aunt returned from a trip to Chicago today, where she picked up a Storm of Swords.

i'm just over 100 pages into Quicksilver, and the "story story" has yet to begin. ffs.
