somewhat the same with me, i think, or perhaps the third. I've beaten Grandia 1 twice and started on it several times.
What i don't like about Justin is, he is too optimistic, naïve and downright retarded at times. I mean, when Gaia is about to attack a village he would rather throw away the only option to save the world avaible at the time on a small town to save a few lives instead of saving all ppl in the world he live in because he thinks its wrong that a few lives should be sacrifised to save the many.. bah... the most annoying thing is that he is always right according to the writers of the game.
Dunno if that is similar to Naruto?!
it's not entirely bad the game, though. I like the battle system, even though casting spells sometimes takes forever. I like the slow old-school adventure start of the game, you know, everything is green and harmonic. The big towns are also somewhat a good feature.
I'll prefer FF over grandia 1, though.
The coolest battle system i have tried is however not the ATB system from the FF games, but a 2D side-scrolling battle system from Tales of Phantasia (snes) and Tales of Destiny 1-2 (psx). I wish i had the original Tales of Destiny 1-2 for psx, i only have them on burned cd's, and the games simply crashed at a given point over and over again (in Tales of Destiny it was near the end and in tales of Destiny II it was half an hour into the game). Despite the anime graphics it's somewhat mature.
