WOT 5: The Fires Of Heaven - Robert Jordan
I hate big fantasy books with small print. So far so good, though.
He died yesterday
I wonder what they'll do for the last book.
May he rest in peace. This took me by such surprise when I found out this morning- he was always so positive about his illness that I took it as a given that he would be all right. Fantasy has lost a great- despite the flaws in some later books, Jordan's series was incredibly ambitious and revolutionary, and I have derived hours upon hours of pleasure from reading his books. My condolences to his wife and family.
"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose.... The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of time. But it was a beginning."
As for his last book, RJ began writing it, and left extensive notes and instructions to his wife and cousin- chances are it'll be given to another writer, hopefully one who can do RJ justice.
R.I.P. indeed. Though 7-10 definitely had their flaws, the first 6 captured me like no other series has. I'm reading 11 right now, and it's a great return to form IMO. I'm really glad they're not going to leave the series unfinished--it's been so long and epic that it would really be a shame if there was no book 12. Hopefully, an established fantasy author will step up to the job. It will be odd having part of the book written by Jordan himself and the rest written by somebody else.
