I agree with this review to a point, I really think this album blows though...like you said, some of it works and some dont, overall its crap compared to NBC, APP and TCHM

Aside from the guitar tone, I think this is a great album.

I do agree with you, somewhat. You have to keep in mind the big three releases that you mentioned I'd all rate in the 90's (which I don't do all too often) with Chainheart and NBC being in the mids with APP being a flat 90 or perhaps an 88. That sort of shows I do feel there is still a gap in quality here but it's not a gigantic leap like it was on the previous two which I'd both rate in the low 60's. I hope that makes sense.

So far I am digging this album! Much Much better than the last 2. Of course not as good as NBC or PP so far anyway. But I will gladly take progress over regression anyday. Ola definately lays down some of the heaviest and rawest riffs since PP and I am not missing Peter at all. I also like the heavier guitar driven production which the last 2 albums lacked.......

These guys keep following the footsteps of In Flames, I see.

Well-regarded staples of melodeath:
Steelbath Suicide/The Jester Race
The Chainheart Machine/Whoracle

Sound starting to change, but generally still liked:
A Predator's Portait/Colony

Even more change, fan base starting to split:
Natural Born Chaos/Clayman

Regarded as sellout turds by many old fans:
Figure Number Five/Reroute to Remain
Stabbing the Drama/Soundtrack to Your Escape

Somewhat of a return to better days; some older fans made happier, if not completely satisfied:
Sworn to a Great Divide/Come Clarity

Natural Born Chaos is no different than anything that followed.

Agreed, it's a bit heavier than Figure Number Five, but that's definitely their least heavy album =x

Ah, I disagree. I think people have a low tolerance for bands that shift styles. Fans generally claim to like the band up to that one album that marked the shift, then say everything after just wasn't that good. I simply believe their threshold for liking that style is one album, any more than that is unforgivable.

Soilwork's album is Natural Born Chaos. In Flames' album is Reroute To Remain. And Dark Tranquillity would have had Projector had they not gone back to the heavy stuff with Haven.

I don't think so. Generally In Flames fans like that one, as that only showed signed of what was to comes. It's still a pretty fast and heavy melodeath album. Reroute To Remain seems to me like the album most either dislike or say is their last decent album.

Just my opinion, of course.

Clayman is one of In Flames' best if you ask me. It's actually heavier than anything they released before it, as Whoracle and Jester's race are more Iron Maiden than death metal. just a thought.
