yeah Stu, and it was a bicycle kick too.

Benfica won 6-1 against a crappy Boavista side (just 6 years ago they were the first club outside the big 3 to win the championship, this season they're strong relegation candidates), and all i can say is that RUI COSTA is fucking godlike, and that Christian Rodriguez kicks ass. i can't believe those idiots at PSG kicked him out, he's amazing.

it certainly was :D

best thing is that my house mate supports chelski lol.

Costa has to go down as one of the best players of his generation, good to hear hes still at the top of his game after so long. How old is he? seems like hes been playing forever lol.

he's 35. he was one of the 1991 youth world champions (playedi n the same team as Luís Figo, Abel Xavier, Fernando Couto and former FC Porto captain Jorge Costa, among others) aka the "golden generation" of Portuguese football.

he can hardly last the full 90 minutes nowadays, but his 10 seasons at the highest level in the Serie A really show, he's got so much class on the pitch it's not even funny.

no, only what comes up in the portuguese news (Man United and Chelsea, the teams with portuguese players). if there's a big win or a great goal i try to see the video online, but usually i just read the news.

as for the golden generation, they flopped largely because of incompetent coaching, especially in world cup 2002 (there was so much stuff wrong with António Oliveira's decisions i don't even know where to start), and some bad luck (like in Euro 2000).
our team was so talented between 2000-2004, i can't believe they didn't win anything. the midfield was especially strong - Luís Figo, Rui Costa, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sérgio Conceição (had a huge drop in form after his suspension in 2002), all world-class players.

but there are players that didn't even make it to the Portuguese 1st division. a documentary here showed where some of them ended up... this one guy from the 1990 team (who also won a youth world cup) was working as a construction worker. pretty sad...

have you seen much of nani? hes pure class, in the mould of Cristiano.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=umESCYSJ8qA

probably the best goal this season.

And there's Frenandez to, you got some great young players coming through that are only gonna get better. Valente has played the last few games for us and done really well (especially against chelsea), not often everton fans have said that lol. I doubt he'll keep his place in the team when baines is back but you guys have got a good left back there. hes getting on a bit tho.

Nani is awesome, but he was lucky because he joined Man United. Simão and Quaresma were just as talented but they never got their chance at Barcelona.

the midfield is still very strong, even after Figo and Rui Costa, what with Cristiano Ronaldo, Simão Sabrosa, Nani, Deco and João Moutinho (Sporting Lisbon). that prick Quaresma is only good with his club FC Porto, though.

As for Manuel Fernandes, when he starts playing alongside Miguel Veloso (son of former Benfica captain António Veloso, keep your eyes on him, he's going places) the midfield will be rock-solid.
talk about Fernandes and Veloso, it's good to see we're finally getting solid center-midfielders (as opposed to just ofensive or defensive midfielders), like Carrick and Steven Gerrard.

all we need now is for Sporting Lisbon to finally train a decent striker at their academy, because for all their world-class midfielders they are yet to give us a striker, damn them.

bah, fuck the national team.

last night we played Armenia at home and won 1-0 (after tieing 1-1 away). Portugal, a team fielding players from some of the best leagues/clubs in the world, beat Armenia, a team of bakers and mailmen, 1-0 at home (actually Armenia are pros i think, but you know what i mean)!

part of me almost wants us to lose to Finland on Wednesday just so these assholes learn a fucking lesson... they were booed by their own crowd last night and rightly so. SHOW SOME FUCKING COMMITMENT!!

and a special note on Ricardo Quaresma - amazing with FC Porto, complete shit with the national team.

---

on the other qualifiers, i'm sad that Scotland didn't make it. they tried ten times harded than Portugal.

Holy crap, Sweden got completely steamrolled by Spain last night. Now we have to defeat Latvia to qualify for the EC. Sounds like an easy match but I have seen some rather spectacular nosedives by Sweden against weaker teams before so I won't take anything for granted
