200 pages into it and it is incredibly good. It is mainly an outlet for criticism of Christianity while depicting the trouble's in Julian's life before he became emperor, at least so far. It also depicts a lot of the sexual culture in Greece. It's written as a memoir with two of Julian's mentors corresponding while reading it which adds a very interesting look into his life and personality.

I finished The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and holy shit. This is definitely one of the best stories I've ever read, and probably my favorite single book (as opposed to a series). highly recommended to anyone...it's basically about the building of a cathedral, but it's more about the characters involved with the building and the power struggle between the corrupt government and the regular people. AMAZING stuff.

Yeah, it's my favourite book so far. I love the length of it, you really get to know the characters and experience their lives.

By the way, he wrote another book that takes place 200 years later during the black death. It was just published. It's called World Without End.

i've been reading bits of Pillars at the store, but never got round to buying it. i'm at the bit when the wife dies but they go back for the baby.

Ken did reccomend us that one, and he was absolutely right. Great book. Haven't gotten around to reading World Without End yet- I think I'll wait till this term's done.

I don't know much about The Pillars of the Earth book but I certainly love the board game off the same book! I'm confident that other board-gamers in here share this affection!

talk about board games, what about the A Song of Ice and Fire ones?

and talk about A Song of Ice and Fire, wouldn't it make one hell of game? you could, like, be a soldier from any of the armies and the aim would be, like, to become strong and famous. you could, like, rise in the ranks, first you'd be able to prepare battle tactics and then you would gain enough power to influence each king's decisions (like where to invade and stuff) and stuff. it would be somehwere between zelda, dinasty wars and battallion wars.

Lord Of Chaos (wheel of time VI) - this series is really getting boring. Does anything actually happen in the next few books?

That's probably the best book in the series. After that it goes down the crapper until book 11



And yeah, i knew about the sequel book but I'm probably going to hold off on that one since I just finished The Pillars Of the Earth. It's funny because towards the middle, I read like 500 pages in three days, which is a lot for me. The book is fucking long but manages to be fairly fast-paced throughout the whole thing so it never gets boring.

Sorry, book 6 is the last one where much happens for a while- book 7 has some events, book 8 barely anything (if I remember, the first 150 pages are some Aes Sedai walking to a farm), book 9 has nothing happen until the last 50 pages, in book 10, literally nothing happens ever and in book 11, things speed up but they are alas, poorly written.

K.J. Parker- The Escapement (Engineer Trilogy Book 3)... hopefully I can fit some time in amongst my school reading to actually read a fiction book.

Gave up on Lord Of Chaos after realising I was falling asleep whilst trying to read it. Someone sum up what happened in the rest of the book (past the girls sitting about talking near the start) and the series, pls.

SPOILERS FOR LAST 5 BOOKS OF WHEEL OF TIME:






At the end of Lord of Chaos, Rand gets captured by Aes Sedai and those desert folk and there's a huge battle where his men destroy them. As a result, he goes a bit more insane.

In book 7, Mat searches for something to control the weather with some bitches and Rand kills Sammael. At the same time, his balefire touches the balefire of Moridin, (Ishmael reborn) and goes a little more insane. He also now has trouble using magic. Perrin's wife is kidnapped by the Shaido. Egwene fights at the White Tower.

In book 8, the weather is all right again and Rand fights an inconclusive battle against the Seanchan. He also gets a bit more insane. Perrin's wife is still captured. Mat is travelling around with a Seanchan princess he'll have to marry one day. Egwene fights at the white tower.

In book 9, nothing happens, except Rand has a mental threesome between Aviendha, Min and Elayne. Elayne tries to boringly retake her throne. Then Rand cleanses saidin.

In book 10, nothing happens. Then nothing happens. Then in the last page, Egwene is captured by the white tower.

In book 11, the Forsaken are incompetent once again, Perrin finally rescues his wife in an anti-climactic sequence that takes 5 pages after its been built up for three books, Egwene is subjected to paddling fetishes- Elayne is a bitch and still can't take her throne- it turns out that Mazrim Taim is a darkfriend- and Mat finally marries the Seanchan princess after chilling with her for three books and nothing actually happening in his plotline.

Oh ya, the fabric of the universe is coming undone, Dark lord's coming, blah.

I'm generally a slow reader. Mainly because things play out in my head at a pace that seems like real time, but I also only read while shitting, at work, or when I go to bed, for the most part. But I finished Pillars of the Earth in about a week. And I was sad when it ended. It's long as fuck, but feels like it's not long enough. It's a great piece of storytelling.

Trying out the Lord Of The Rings again, starting with The Hobbit. I like the first chapter, the excessive detail isn't bothering me as much as it did before... But then again, this is the first chapter.

Good luck. I can't stand reading those fucking books. I've tried at least 10 times. It ain't happening.

Yeah, I started reading them again a couple of weeks ago and can appreciate the details he puts into everything this time around... had to stop for a bit because I've got a buttload of school reading now :[

Agreed. The last time I tried I stopped halfway through "The Two Towers" and now when I've seen the movies I doubt I'll ever read the book.

By the way have you (or anyone else) read the sequel to "The Pillars of the Earth"? "Pillars" is one of the best books I've ever read.

The Hobbit is nothing like LOtR at all-remember, it's a children's book.
