Since we've been talking about it for a few pages in the "Faces" discussion, I figured I'd start a new topic to carry over the discussion.

http://www.ubyssey.ca/?p=2241

Here's my article on it, and my two cents.

Interesting article. I thought you'd have made more of the social deviance point. I don't smoke, but both parents do, and when one of them lights up in public, people look at them as if they've shot up smack.

Even though I have a weird thing about smoking because of my parents ( I asscoiate it with an older generation) I do support those who choose to, probably because it pisses health Nazis off.

That's all nonsense to try and justify being an idiot; the same crap nearly every smoker spews. You're a moron.

And you smell like a horses ass on fire.

Non-smokers will never "get it" Most of my family members smoke and none of them have ever gotten cancer as far back as as I can trace the family tree. Most of us live into our 70's and 80's and we all eat the worst fat-filled food imaginable as well.

There is no verifiable scientific evidence to support second hand smoke causing health problems, NONE. any study that says otherwise has been attempted again with different results, that is not science. Common sense and speculation play no part in science.

Oh yes, I read the comments. Anyone that drives a car causes a hell of a lot more health problems with that than any smoker could dream of. Burning a naturally occuring leaf will never be as harmful as burning a volitule explosive chemical.

By volume a smoker maybe burns about a carton of tobacco a week, the average person in a car burns a gallon of gas a day. About four cartons of cigarettes are equal to a gallon of gas in volume and gas is about 10,000 times more carcinigenistic than tobacco leaves.

I say if Jaden chooses to smoke then so be it. Everyone of my friends (while growing up) smoked. Most of them still do.It's their own personal choice just as it's Jaden's . Everyone, at this point in time is aware of the dangers associated with smoking. Some may be effected and some may not.

1. I'm sure you can associate a lot of things with being meditative; a lot of things that don't suck your health away.

2. Walking won't be so enjoyable anymore when you're coughing out a lung.

3. I could buy a big bag of little peppermints if I want to reward myself 10-20 times a day.

4. A lot of smokers I've met are assholes (Not saying all of them are, but y'know).

5. Jogging helps you lose weight too, and it's a good cardiovascular excersize. I know that doesn't mean people should and will start jogging everywhere, but just because you smoke doesn't mean you'll look good. A lot of smokers I've met have yellow fingernails, saggy, leathery skin, and some are still fat.

6. I think I'll stick with coffee and chocolate cake. <3

And I'm not saying that you shouldn't smoke because it's evil or anything, believe me, those TRUTH commercials piss me off too. You can smoke if you want to, but I just refuted your six points to give my two cents on the matter.

As an ex-smoker myself, I can understand smoking, but really Trev, your six points there are a load of rubbish. Smoking may be your choice, but passive smoking is definately harmful - walking behind smokers in the street is a dreadful experience for me, perhaps moreso because I used to smoke and so my lungs have been permanently weakened...

Here's an interesting experiment: replace tobacco in your six points with smack, or heroin for the rest of you. The points are all exactly the same - meditative, fun to walk to (crap point anyway, talk about scraping the barrel), something to look forward to, junkies are interesting (says you), helps to lose weight, and goes nice with coffee.

In fact, you can replace cigarettes in those points with anything from "Woody Allen" to "masturbating in public". So, you choose to smoke and kill yourself, fine, it's your right, but keep it away from where I can breathe it in, please.

More nonsensical drivel from a smoker. Completely false, of course.

Examples PLEASE. So having a horrible headache, sore throat and wanting to vomit everywhere because you're just been couped up in a place full of smokers are not adverse health effects? GTFO.

Driving is necessary, smoking is not. Smokers actively inhale the fumes, drivers do not. Also, petrol is distilled from rotten leaves and dinosaurs, what's your point? Some of the most harmless substances are made in a lab and some of the worst come from nature. Psstt, a class of dangerous pesticides is made of daisies.

1. I find damiana tea meditative. It's non-addictive and is good for my kidneys.

2. I enjoy walking because it's good exercise and I can look at the world around me, even if it appears bland on first sight. Also, smoke-walkers should be shot on sight. I don't care if you smoke, but for fuck's sake DON'T SMOKEWALK. It's the most inconsiderate thing anyone can do. You can't smell it because you're used to it, and can't see it because it's behind you, but you're leaving a 4-10 metre trail of smoke behind you every time you do that. Waiting at pedestrian crossing lights with smokers is hell.

3. Looking forward to something frequently is a euphemism for addiction. This is not a good thing.

4. Jaden, smokers are not necesarily deviants. One in five Australians smoke. That doesn't make them deviant. In most cases smoking is a sign of conformity. I've met more interesting non-smokers than interesting smokers because fuck, there are more non-smokers out there. That, and interesting non-smokers don't go near smokers.

5. Smoking starves your cells of oxygen, suppresses a healthy appetite and actually eats away your internal organs.

6. Speedball. You haven't lived until you experienced this combination.

I used to smoke 1-2 packs a day for about 6 years... More recently I usually don't smoke at all on a daily basis ( Well, cigs ) but I am known to pick up a cancer stick here and there. I can't say it's really an addiction, but something I do choose to do... I didn't really have much problem going from 1-2 packs a day down to pretty much nothing.

That's me personally though. I'm sure it's different for everyone.

As for the act itself... I guess it doesn't bother me. I suppose you could say that's influenced by the fact that I am a smoker myself ( even though not so much any more ) but honestly I think people should be able to make their own choices and as long as they're not douches about where they smoke ( IE right in front of your face if you're not down with it ) then whatever.

Oh yeah and I didn't read your article, OP. Sorry.

Also I'm really glad to see people calling others a moron and shit for their opinoin. Really fucking friendly environment we have here. SHAME that others have a different viewpoint, for sure.

There is such a thing as a shitty opinion, and having a shitty opinion makes you a douche.

Smoking is a choice, and I respect that. I do not respect smokers who make a smoking choice for other people by subjecting them to secondhand smoke. That includes smoking parents.

When in Italy they passed the law that you couldn't smoke in bars, I was really happy. Even as a smoker, i fucking hate second-hand smoke (well i don't mind when it is outside) inside places.

But anyway I also think there is no more respect for smokers. I mean look at the price of cigarettes... WTF?

Btw I am afraid that all the scientific facts in this thread are just plain wrong or inaccurate, so just don't listen to them... :)

That's just Ken.... I imagine him as the sort of man who cannot tell the difference between talking to people and yelling at them.

Once again Sash delivers! There's a bright girl of my own mind! Totally agree.
