Benfica tied at home with middle-of-the-table Leixões 0-0, while FC Porto crushed European contenders Sporting Braga 4-0, making for a staggering 11 point gap between themselves and SLB in second.

this is fucking embarassing, since 1995 that FC Porto has won all but 4 championships, and they've taken most cups and supercups as well, i think. Benfica may still have the best all-round curriculum but at this rate it won't last long.

I've given up on soccer after seeing the match Lazio-Genoa. Too many disappointments.

To be honest I was hoping they would appoint Shearer, he would be an abject failure, and their deluded fans would have nothing to shout about for a change.

Oh, Rangers just beat Gretna 2-1. Four points clear at the top of the league baby! :dio:

i think it was Alex Ferguson who said that the Newcastle position was the worst job in the premiership...

anyway, what about Ronaldo in the 6-0 thrashing? i still can't believe he didn't take Player of the Year from both FIFA and France Football, let alone second place.
if one considers titles won, then Kaka has the advantage for taking the Copa America, CL and World Club Cup, but in everything else Ronaldo has been better than Kaka and surely head-and-shoulders above Messi (wtf, he did for half a season what Ronaldo's been doing for the last 2 years! go figure!).

he's been scoring and assisting like crazy (he's not a striker yet he's found the net 22 times) and all in all he is probably the most complete ofensive player in the world (seriously).

He is a class act. Got nothing but praise for the lad. Glad he finally got his hat trick.

I've not seen enough of kaka to know weather or not he deserved to win it , and saw very little of messi. but i have seen messi quite a lot of times this season and hes been pure class every time. Hes made henry and ronaldiniho look average. not many players can do that lol.

Messi has been carrying Barcelona this season, Ronaldo has been amazing for 2 years now.

as for Ronaldinho, he's making himself look average. he's a shadow of the player who took Barcelona to the CL victory in 2005/2006.

Kaka is incredible, and like i said he took more titles than Ronaldo last season (including the CL.. where Milan beat Man United). he's nothing short of amazing.

it's a toss up between Ronaldo and Kaka, but surely not between the former and Messi.

Finally, Liverpool recorded their first league win of 2008. As a Reds' fan all my life I finally feel relief. It's been too long since they've played decently and they've dropped too low in the league while boasting top players in the team.

I'm quite fickle minded bout Rafa. I definitely think he's a great manager, but sometimes does rather silly things especially in selecting the first XI. I'm sure he can do wonders, without being an idiot first of course. Anyhow, I hope he stays at Anfield and clean up the mess, prove to those stuck up-good-for-nothing-know-nothing-bout-football Yanks that he can do wonders.

Frankly I'm very afraid of Rafa leaving the Reds because nearly quarter to half of the players would follow suit. I can't bear the likes of Torres and Alonso leaving when they're at their peak donning the Red shirt.

man, Benfica have been complete shit recently. everytime they get a good result they follow it up with a home tie against middle of the table clubs, and everytime they have a chance to take first place or at least put serious pressure on the leader they fuck it up: this year they lost at home to Porto, last year they tied at home to Porto and two years before they lost at home to Sporting. in all 3 games besides home advantage they even came from good results, like many consecutive wins or the away win at Anfield Road (lol Hellraiser) 2 years ago.

i don't know why, something always goes wrong.

anyway, Benfica need to take a good, hard look at themselves. we still have the most titles, but since 1995 we've won only 1 champ., 1 cup and 1 supercup or something. Porto, on the other hand, have been absolutely DOMINATING, taking all but 4 champs. since 1995.

the current management deserves the hats off for the incredible financial work (the club was close to bankruptcy) but the signings policy is absurd. they didn't increase Simao's salary, instead selling him off, then signed two unnecessary/shit players who receive fortunes (Butt and Zoro, respectively). the management is either bowing to player manager pressure or simply being stupid, neither of which is good for the club.

Rui Costa is likely to retire after this season (i'm praying he changes his mind) and there's no one at the club who can fill his shoes, at least not right now, and they don't want to renew with Leo the left-back, arguably our best left-back since Antonio Veloso from the early 90's. apparently they forget that in the last 15 years we had maybe 3 good right- or left-backs (seriously).

i have a real fear that Benfica may end up like Nottingham bloody Forest. knock on wood...

Well I guess the current state Benfica is in at the moment is quite similar to Liverpool. Fallen giants, we call them. But nevertheless, we boast the respective leagues best record setters, Az!!

the Nottingham Forest comparison is a bit exaggerated, i guess (Benfica is still the club with the most fans and it'll never fall from the first division or something), but in a few years Porto will have as many titles as Benfica.

the "we're still the best" thing will only work if you have a present that keeps the high standards from the past, and that's not the case right now. the signings policy is absolutely ridiculous and there are players that are a fucking INSULT to football (as in I'VE PLAYED WEEKEND FOOTIE MATCHES AGAINST BETTER PLAYERS!!).

i'm not saying we can only have world-class players, but bloody hell have some fucking standards!

even the coach, Camacho, seems a changed man. in his first spell at Benfica it took Mourinho's super-powered european champions Porto and some horrible refereeing* to stop Benfica, he was never quiet on the bench, and if the team underperformed in the first half they more than made up in the second after Camacho gave them a good listening-to. now even he acts like there's nothing to be done, always giving the same "we have to work harder" speech.

*for a while, this served as an exuse. it was true, Porto had absurd penalties and red cards and all that in their favour, but at least then we played to win nonetheless. you can't use the ref as an exuse this season if you play like shit.

bah...
