I would stick with his earlier works.
Carrie, 'salem's Lot, Night Shift, Dead Zone, The Stand (hope you're not busy for a few months), Firestarter... also The Bachman Books were quite good.

Of the bachman books, The only one that I thought was good was The Rage, which kicked serious ass.

That's what I'm currently reading. I thought all the stories were rather good, though.

Let me know what you think of that. I have a copy but I'm not sure if it's worth the time to read.

Petronius- The Satyricon

The first Roman novel (that we have) and man, is it bizarre and hilarious. Its about a male prostitute named Encolpius who becomes impotent and goes on a quest to regain his virility.
And that's what Satyricon named their band after?

Now reading: King Lear and Proud Beggars by Albert Cossery (I finally found a copy for cheap. His books are so hard to find.)

The Dark Half (not to be confused with The Dark Tower) is quite good, as well.

Despite the 5 books I'm already reading i decided to also read Almost Transparent Blue by Ryu Murakami and A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh.

Joe Abercrombie- Before They Are Hanged

How is it? I am eagerly awiting it in the US - March 25th.

It showed up early - just picked it up at Barnes & Noble.

Now to decide what to read next: Before They Are Hanged or the new Cornwell 'Sword Song' - can't lose either way...

Yeah i would also recommend "IT".

NR: Dan Simmons - The Fall Of Hyperion; I hope it'll be as good as the first one.

Its not. Nowhere near as good (Simmons, in general, is much better at setting up then resolving) But it is still pretty good.

Metalhed: About a hundred pages into Sword Song now (are you stalking my reading choices, by the way) and of course its good, just like Cornwell always is. But Before They Are Hanged is awesome- I reccomend it first.

Things They Carried is pretty damn good. The story with the buffalo is a gut wrencher.

I'm now reading Proud Beggars by Albert Cossery. It's about a guy who embraces poverty in like an ascetic existential way. It's pretty good so far plus Henry Rollins endorses it.

The Man I Killed was also pretty gut-wrenching. Sweetheart Of The Song-Tra Bong (or whatever it's called) is damn awesome.

The first half of The Dark Tower is amazing. Then somewhere between the 90s and the early 2000s King got old.

I'm thinking about starting to read the HP Lovecraft books, everywhere I go they seem to be held in very high regards. I'm sure they've been discussed in this thread before but I don't really feel like going through nearly 100 pages :)

Anyone recommending them? And where should I start?

If Sweetheart is the story with the chick who immerses herself totally in the jungle, that story is awesome. Looking back, that book was probably the best I read for a high school class.

As for Lovecraft, he wrote all short stories and you can download them all right here: A list of 'L' authors. (His whole collection is there.) Lovecraft is probably the best atmospheric writer, probably on par with some of the best of Poe's works. Ignore any movies made from a Lovecraft story, except for the original Re-animator movie. As for his short stories, I'd recommend starting with Call of Cthulhu, Dagon, Reanimator, and Horror at Red Hook.

As well as Scott Mcleod's Understanding Comics

Yeah... I agree about King getting losing steam, or changing gears more accurately, but his earlier works are still pretty good.
Only read the first installment of the Dark Tower and thought it was pretty cool.
