Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera

Regaded by most to be his weakest, and I'd avoided seeing it for a while. It has Asia in, which is obviously a huge plus point, but it also is a romance, which isn't really his forte (although I thought the romance in Trauma was very well done and one of the best things about the film). Anyway, in many ways it's quite inept, and he adds an out-of-place "wacky" element to some key scenes.

Still, it is Dario and therefore it kicked the ass of the next film I saw, supposedly some kind of saviour of US horror or some bollocks like that...

Hatchet

Really nothing at all here that wasn't totally run of the mill: cliched characters getting picked off by cliched deformed hard-to-kill monster. Literally nothing I hadn't seen a million times before. The high point was Tony Todd's cameo.

Return of the Evil Dead

The second in the Blind Dead series- classic Spanish zombie fun. The second time I saw it, and the second time I've gone to sleep. Not because it's dull, because it really isn't, but because I tend to watch them really late at night and overestimate my wide-awakeness. But these films are worth watching for zombie fans.

There Will Be Blood

Boooooring.... too fucking long. Some elements of it were really good, but there were entire massive storylines that could have ben wholly erased from the script imo. Like his brother turning up? That was about 40 minutes of screen time, and not once did I give a shit about that plotline. The best element by far was Daniel Day Lewis' repeated run-ins with the slimy preacher, I enjoyed them a lot.

Semi-Pro - Will Ferrell could get a new fucking idea already, what's with this retarded sportsman obsession?
He plays the same kind of character in all of his roles. The big, arrogant oblivoius idiot. I don't know why he is so popular

But he's got a funny haircut! How can that not be hilarious?

Actually, to give Ferrell credit, he was quite good in Stranger Than Fiction - cast totally against type. The film was a bit too smart-arsey for my liking but still quite good. Obviously playing the same character again and again guarantess more $$$ though.

I had a tough time sleeping last night. I woke up around 5:30am and was surfing around all the movie channels. I found Grindhouse Presents: Planet Terror. That was one cool movie. If you like horror/zombie films with a touch of humor then this is for you. Plus, Rose McGowan was just hot...damn hot!!

Tombstone - Doc Holiday? Awesome.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 - I like how the thought process going into making this movie must have been "Hey, this would be cool, so lets do it." Also, Sonny Chiba? Awesome.

Renaissance - Very cool sci-fi movie. It looked like a black and white graphic novel brought to life. It starred a loose cannon cop on the edge who made all his own rules in the future.

What the fuck.

I watched that again this morning, I think the ending kinda drags and that doesn't work so well in the movie. The first hour and a half is soooo good though

Vantage point, it's alright although the ending ruins it for me.

Jumper was a lot less bad than I expected. The fact that it is really fucking stupid is hidden behid how well-made it is. The bit in Rome was far too long though, and the ending was total "uh....okay?" material.

Kingdom of the Blind - Interesting satire on revolutions. Went a bit silly towards the end, but more good than bad.

I don't think so...I think the whole thing is excellent. At first, I was just like "...what?" at the ending, but now, a few days after seeing it, I really like the ending. Srsly one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Bug - Like, film of the year. Best performance I've ever seen from Ashley Judd, fantastic.

Edit: Just found this on IMDB:

Quote:
Dream dad crazed by horror film
By Adrian Shaw 12/01/2008

A city boss unhinged by a horror film beat his beloved two-year-old daughter to death believing she was possessed by the Devil.

Screaming "Death!", "Bitch!" and "This bastard won't die!" millionaire Alberto Izaga smashed the head of toddler Yanire against the wooden floor of his apartment in front of his horrified wife Ligia.

High-flying Izaga was a loving dad who regarded Yanire as "the most precious treasure on earth", the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

But tragically he was suffering from an acute psychotic illness possibly triggered by the disturbing horror movie Bug which he and Ligia had watched days earlier.

AdvertisementThe film, never released in Britain, was panned by critics for its "gross scenes of body mutilation". Insurance executive Izaga was ordered to be sent indefinitely to a psychiatric hospital.

Earlier he wept as his loyal wife, who is standing by him, said in a statement to the court: "Alberto was not himself. He loves us.

"It's impossible to believe this has happened. Yanire was our life. Everything we did was for her." Prosecutor Jonathan Rees said: "If ever a case deserved to be described as truly tragic this is it.

"How else can one describe a case in which an utterly devoted father kills a daughter he loves in front of his wife, the girl's mother?"

Judge Richard Hone told Izaga: "No sentence will compare with the sentence you will impose on yourself. I wish you and your wife the best possible future." Izaga, 36, was senior executive at Swiss Re and lived in a £1million flat overlooking the Houses of Parliament.

Mr Rees said: "He was universally liked. Professionally, he was clever and driven. At home, he was a doting husband and father."

On June 3 he woke at 4.30am and began rambling incoherently and repeating the word "bug".

After hours of raving he plucked Yanire from her cot and battered her, shouting: "I know what I have to do. I have to kill her."

Distraught Ligia, 36, rang for help. When police arrived, Spanish-born Izaga's eyes were rolling.

Yanire died two days later from multiple skull fractures.

Defending, David Perry QC said Izaga told doctors he believed his wife and daughter were possessed by the Devil and capable of harm. He said: "Truly, he is to be pitied."

The court heard Izaga and his wife had sat through Bug in New York the previous month. The film they wanted to see was sold out.

Izaga had recently returned from Geneva where he had exhibited signs of stress. He complained he had not slept for 72 hours.

He was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

Reservoir Dogs - i really, really don't see what the hype is all about. the story was kind of dumb, the only good thing was some witty conversation here and there.

Agreed. I liked the song playing whilst Michael Madsen was ear-cutting, and I like most of the actors, but the film itself? Way, way overrated.

+1

Exactly! On the whole the movie was great. I enjoyed it a lot. They really kept the suspense at a consistent level, having so many different view points to a scene. I thought the ending was a but too premature. Suddenly poof!! they're gone. What the hell?

Something my friend and I couldn't help making fun about the movie was about the car that Thomas (Dennis Quaid) was driving. I don't really know what make it is, but it's blue, and boy, it's gotta be the toughest car in the world. He drove the car through walkpaths, crashes into other cars and yet the headlights are still intact!!! Holy shit!!! And then when he crashes with the truck, we wondered if he's still gonna drive on. Finally the poor car succumbed to it's injuries. Well it's about time!!!

American Heart. Ed Furlong and Jeff Bridges in an older movie about struggling to survive in the city. It was good; Jeff Bridges is awesome.

I saw semi-pro. On a scale of Will Ferrell movies, it being:
Anchorman at number one, Talledega nights being the worst, with Blades of glory somewhere in between, I'd say Semi-Pro would be ranked slightly after Blades of Glory.

I saw Semi-Pro today as well, I loved it. Been a fan of Ferrell since the day I saw him on SNL like 9 years ago. Really looking forward to his next movie Step Brothers.
